Marshall Scholarships: Call for Applications for the 2024-25 Cohort

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to fifty Scholars are selected each year to study at the graduate level at any UK institution in any field of study.

Strengthening UK-US Ties

Marshall Scholars are envisioned as future leaders with a lasting understanding of British society. Their engagement with Britain through top academic programs enhances their intellectual and personal growth, contributing to their ultimate success. These scholars help strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments, and institutions.

Programme Objectives

  • Intellectual Growth: Enable intellectually distinguished young Americans to study in the UK.
  • Cultural Appreciation: Help Scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain.
  • Academic Advancement: Contribute to the advancement of knowledge in various fields at Britain’s centres of academic excellence.
  • Ambassadorship: Motivate Scholars to act as ambassadors between the USA and the UK throughout their lives.
  • Personal Fulfillment: Promote the personal and academic fulfillment of each Scholar.

Key Information

  • Open Date: June 3, 2024, at 5 pm BST for the 2025 application cycle.
  • Eligibility: Open only to United States citizens who (at the time they take up their Scholarship) hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7. Candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate college or university after April 2022.
  • Value: Covers university fees, living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States, and a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse if applicable.
  • Number of Awards: Up to 50 Scholarships awarded annually.
  • Tenure:
    • The Two-Year Marshall Scholarship is tenable for two academic years (22 months) but may be extended by the Commission for strong academic reasons, not beyond a third academic year.
    • The One-Year Marshall Scholarship is tenable for one academic year (12 months) and cannot be extended.

To be eligible for a 2025 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
  • (By the time they take up their scholarship i.e. September 2025) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application. We do not accept rounded GPA’s.
  • Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2022.
  • Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK.

Application Process

Applications are made in one of eight regions in the United States. Candidates may apply in one region only – either where they have their permanent home address or ordinary place of residence/employment, or where they are studying.

How to Apply

  1. Before You Apply:
    • Read the Rules for Candidates carefully.
    • Consider the objectives of the Marshall Scholarship Programme.
    • Review the evaluation criteria and the information on the Marshall Partnership Scholarships.
  2. Application Submission:
    • Complete the online application form and submit it through the system to your undergraduate institution.
    • Your institution will ensure the application is complete and decide whether to endorse it. If endorsed, they will submit it to the appropriate regional committee.
  3. Important Deadlines:
    • September 24, 2024: Deadline for applicants and recommenders to submit applications by 5:00 pm in the time zone of your university.
    • September 26, 2024: Deadline for endorsement and submission by US institutions by 5:00 pm in the time zone of your university.

Post-Application Process

Applications will be reviewed at eight regional centres in the United States. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in November. Final selections will be announced shortly after interviews. Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship in writing and must respond within 10-12 days.
