YIL Fellowship 2026: Empowering Africa’s Next Generation of Innovation Leaders
The Young Innovation Leaders (YIL) Fellowship is one of Africa’s most impactful leadership and innovation programs, designed to nurture young individuals into solution-driven changemakers. Since its inception in 2018, the fellowship has steadily grown into a powerful platform equipping young Africans with the skills, mindset, and networks necessary to tackle pressing challenges across the continent.
The Origin and Evolution of the YIL Fellowship
The YIL Fellowship was founded by Dr. Obichi Obiajunwa in 2018 with a clear and compelling vision: to bridge the gap between traditional academic education and the practical demands of the modern workplace. Initially launched as the HELP Fellowship (Hutzpa Excellence Leadership Program), it was rebranded in 2019 to better reflect its mission and broader impact.
From the beginning, the fellowship was built on a bold idea;to transform young Africans from passive consumers of knowledge into proactive creators of innovative solutions. Recognizing the immense potential within Africa’s youth population, the founder set out to build a program that would cultivate leadership, creativity, and problem-solving abilities in a structured and impactful way.
The early success of YIL was supported by a strong network of individuals committed to youth development. Contributions from Prof. Emeka Okereke through crowdfunding efforts provided critical financial support, while Pharm. Nnamdi Ifeagwu played a key role in operationalizing the vision. The unwavering support from Dr. Obiajunwa’s wife, Chizobam, also contributed significantly to the successful launch of the fellowship.
Strategic Partnerships and Expansion Across Africa
A major turning point for the fellowship came through its partnership with Plan International in 2018, which strengthened its focus on prototype development and female empowerment. By 2019, YIL had expanded into Ghana with support from Dr. Anna Fokouh-Boadu, signaling its transition into a pan-African initiative.
That same year, YIL collaborated with UNFPA Nigeria to host an innovation lab addressing critical issues such as maternal health and reproductive rights. The program continued to grow with support from UNFPA Ghana, enabling wider participation across the region.
Further partnerships with institutions such as the University of Ibadan allowed YIL to introduce scholarship awards for top-performing students in fields like medicine, engineering, and physical sciences. These collaborations not only enhanced the program’s credibility but also deepened its academic and professional relevance.
Through connections established by Neta Hanien, YIL gained access to international networks such as the ROI Community and the Schusterman Foundation, expanding its global reach and resource base.
Adaptation, Growth, and Recognition
During the COVID-19 pandemic, YIL demonstrated resilience and adaptability by transitioning to a fully virtual model. This shift opened doors for even more young Africans to participate regardless of geographic limitations.
In subsequent years, the fellowship continued to expand its influence:
- In 2021, it partnered with WIPO Nigeria to train finalists from an annual essay competition.
- In 2022, AUDA-NEPAD supported a boot camp in Nairobi focused on East African participants.
- Through collaboration with the African University of Science and Technology in Abuja, fellows now have the opportunity to earn a diploma in innovation management upon completing the program.
YIL’s impact has also been recognized internationally. The Embassy of Israel honored the fellowship in 2021 and 2022 for its leadership in managing the I-FAIR program, which supports inventors and researchers in commercializing their ideas. In 2023, YIL launched the IP-SALAYE initiative with WIPO Nigeria, training youth corps members to apply intellectual property solutions to community challenges.
Program Impact and Achievements
Since its establishment, the YIL Fellowship has trained over 200 fellows and reached more than 1,500 young people through its programs. These numbers reflect not only participation but also the ripple effect of innovation and leadership across communities.
The fellowship continues to stand as a leading force in youth development, empowering a generation that is equipped to drive meaningful change across Africa.
