After a strategic review and relaunch, the Barr Fellowship is returning with a renewed vision focused on resilience, renewal, leadership sustainability, collaboration, and relationship-building among nonprofit leaders across Massachusetts.
The Fellowship recognizes extraordinary civic and nonprofit leaders while providing substantial financial support, executive coaching, wellness resources, and long-term networking opportunities that strengthen both individuals and organizations.

About the Barr Fellowship
The Barr Fellowship was first launched in 2005 by the Barr Foundation to celebrate and strengthen exceptional leadership across the nonprofit and social impact sectors.
Over the years, the Fellowship has supported more than 80 leaders across seven cohorts, creating a vibrant network of changemakers working in different fields and communities throughout Massachusetts.
Following the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice movements, increasing climate concerns, and growing pressure on nonprofit organizations, the Foundation conducted an extensive review of the Fellowship program.
The result is a refreshed Fellowship experience built specifically to help leaders:
- Combat burnout and isolation
- Improve resilience and sustainability
- Develop collaborative leadership skills
- Build stronger professional networks
- Foster healthier organizational cultures
- Invest in personal well-being and renewal
The 2026 Fellowship reflects a growing recognition that nonprofit leaders need more than funding alone — they also need support systems, trusted relationships, wellness opportunities, and sustainable leadership practices.
What the Barr Fellowship 2026 Offers
Selected Fellows and their organizations will receive a comprehensive package of financial, professional, and leadership support over a 15-month period.
1. $75,000 Organizational Grant
Each selected Fellow’s organization will receive a total grant of $75,000, divided into two major components:
- $25,000 dedicated to the Fellow’s personal well-being, leadership development, and renewal
- $50,000 allocated to organizational resilience, staff wellness, and operational sustainability
This funding structure ensures that both the individual leader and their organization benefit from the Fellowship experience.
2. Executive and Organizational Coaching
Participants will receive 50 hours of coaching support, including:
- Executive coaching for the Fellow
- Organizational coaching focused on resilience-building and leadership sustainability
- Strategic guidance to strengthen organizational culture and collaborative leadership practices
The coaching component is designed to help leaders navigate complex challenges while developing healthier and more effective leadership approaches.
3. Cohort Learning and Leadership Development
Fellows will participate in approximately 16 days of scheduled programming over 15 months.
The program includes:
- Leadership retreats

The cohort model allows Fellows to connect deeply with leaders from diverse backgrounds and disciplines across Massachusetts.

Eligibility Criteria for the Barr Fellowship 2026
To qualify for the Fellowship, both the organization and the nominated leader must meet specific eligibility requirements.
Organizational Eligibility Requirements
Applicant organizations must:
- Be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity or fiscally sponsored by one
- Be headquartered in Massachusetts
- Conduct at least 75% of activities or programming in Massachusetts
- Have an operating budget between approximately $500,000 and $5 million
- Demonstrate strong commitment to justice, belonging, and inclusive leadership
- Maintain adequate staffing and operational capacity during Fellowship participation
Organizations That Are Not Eligible
The following organizations cannot apply:
- Government agencies
- Hospitals
- K-12 schools
- Higher education institutions
- Organizations primarily focused on re-granting funds
Individual Eligibility Requirements
The organization’s nominated candidate must:
- Serve as CEO, Executive Director, or Co-Director
- Have held their current role for at least 3 years
- Have 3–10 years of nonprofit executive leadership experience
- Be a full-time resident of New England
- Work professionally with significant focus on Massachusetts
- Demonstrate commitment to justice, belonging, and healthy organizational culture
- Commit fully to all Fellowship activities and participation requirements
