Senior/Lead Education Specialist (Foundational Literacy & Numeracy) in AI for LMICs – Fab AI Global Remote Opportunity 2026
This is a high-impact recruitment opportunity for an experienced education specialist to join a mission-driven team working at the intersection of education, artificial intelligence, and global development. The role focuses on designing and leading pedagogical frameworks for AI evaluation systems that assess foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) contexts.
The organization is expanding its education team and is seeking either a Senior or Lead Education Specialist depending on experience. The successful candidate will play a central role in defining what high-quality learning looks like when AI systems are used to support early-grade reading and mathematics across diverse languages, scripts, and resource-constrained classrooms.
This position is ideal for professionals who have deep, practical experience in foundational education systems and want to influence how AI technologies are evaluated for real-world classroom impact.
About the Organization
Fab AI is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for learners who are currently underserved by global education systems. With nearly a decade of experience and a multidisciplinary team spread across 14 countries, the organization brings together educators, economists, data scientists, designers, and software engineers.
The team operates across Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa and focuses exclusively on education innovation, particularly in low-resource and multilingual learning environments. Their mission is to ensure that emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, are designed and evaluated with strong pedagogical foundations.
Job Purpose and Core Focus
The primary purpose of this role is to lead the pedagogical design of AI benchmarks and evaluation frameworks for foundational literacy and numeracy in LMIC classrooms.
The role ensures that AI systems used in education are assessed based on robust educational principles rather than purely technical performance metrics.
Key focus areas include:
- Early-grade reading and mathematics instruction
- Multilingual and multicultural classroom environments
- Low-resource education systems
- Alignment between pedagogy and AI evaluation standards
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will contribute across multiple high-impact areas:
1. Pedagogical Design of AI Benchmarks
- Develop structured task taxonomies for AI evaluation in education
- Create assessment items and prompts aligned to early-grade curricula
- Design scoring rubrics that reflect real classroom learning outcomes
- Ensure benchmarks reflect diverse languages and writing systems
2. Expansion of Existing Evaluation Frameworks
- Extend current benchmarks covering pedagogy, SEND, visual mathematics, and African languages
- Strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy coverage within AI evaluation systems
3. Design of AI Evaluation Systems
- Build frameworks for evaluating both student-facing and teacher-facing AI tools
- Ensure evaluation methods reflect real educational challenges in LMIC classrooms
4. Classroom-Based Evidence Integration
- Participate in rapid-cycle evaluation studies in real-world school environments
- Translate classroom realities into measurable AI evaluation criteria
5. Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work closely with governments, education partners, developers, and teachers

- Experience in multilingual education systems and language transition strategies
- Expertise in early mathematics instruction and classroom-based numeracy approaches
- Ability to work across multiple projects in dynamic environments
- Strong collaboration skills within diverse international teams
- A problem-solving mindset and openness to continuous learning
Highly Desirable Experience
- Structured pedagogy and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approaches
- Inclusive education design, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Experience in classrooms with limited resources, large student populations, or low teacher training capacity
- Curriculum design and alignment with government education systems
Additional Valuable Experience
- Writing decodable texts for early reading instruction
- Teacher professional development and coaching in LMIC settings
- Familiarity with AI-enabled educational technologies such as adaptive learning systems
- Cross-cultural collaboration in education and development contexts
