Overview

The Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) offers a unique traineeship programme for students and recent graduates. This opportunity is ideal for those interested in gaining professional experience in a multicultural environment and deepening their understanding of the United Nations system.

MDPU delivers core diplomacy training to approximately 2,500 diplomats yearly, along with various training activities at country and regional levels. The Unit also develops e-Learning courses, special projects, advisory services, and collaborates with universities worldwide to offer high-quality Master’s Programmes related to Multilateral Diplomacy and International Law.

We are enhancing our outreach and communication strategies and are looking for a trainee to join us for four to six months. This position is unpaid, but a monthly stipend of 900 CHF is provided for transportation and miscellaneous costs.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the trainee will:

  • Assist in developing UNITAR’s external communication products (social media ads, flyers, landing pages, etc.)
  • Support the MDPU Communications Team with strategy and promotional activities
  • Update website and landing pages
  • Manage news articles and program overviews
  • Develop and maintain communication plans and schedules
  • Research promotional opportunities and manage event details
  • Monitor and develop content for MDPU’s LinkedIn Alumni Group
  • Edit and subtitle videos for social media and courses
  • Take photographs and shoot videos at events
  • Manage mass mailings using Mailjet

Learning Objectives

By the end of the traineeship, the trainee should be able to:

  • Work independently and take initiative
  • Adhere to UNITAR’s branding guidelines
  • Develop professional relationships with UNITAR and UN staff
  • Propose initiatives to further UNITAR’s mission
  • Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, multicultural environment

Minimum Requirements

  • Enrollment in or recent graduate of an undergraduate/graduate/postgraduate program in communication, public relations, graphic design, video production/editing, marketing, international relations, or related field
  • Excellent oral and written English; knowledge of French or other UN languages is a plus
  • Strong interest in the United Nations and communications
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Analytical and research skills
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, internet)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • High responsibility, commitment, and initiative
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills and a sense of storytelling

Dates and Duration

  • Start Date: End of August or early September (exact date to be agreed)
  • Duration: Four to six months, full-time (five days a week); part-time arrangements possible if agreed in advance
