Plan International Canada’s Board of Directors comprises dedicated volunteers who contribute their skills, experience, and passion to fulfill our mission and strategy. The Position

We are seeking a young Canadian (aged 18-24) to join our Board of Directors as a voting member starting in November 2024, with orientation and mentorship beginning in summer 2024. This is a 3-year volunteer term.

Plan International Canada values youth voices in decision-making. Our first Youth Board member joined in 2021, and we are now recruiting our second. We seek fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that resonate with today’s younger generation to enrich our strategic planning and ensure our programs remain relevant and impactful.

Commitment Requirements

  • Quarterly Meetings: Hybrid format with two in-person meetings in Toronto (full day) and two virtual meetings (two days).
  • Additional Meetings: 1-2 extra Board or Committee meetings per year.
  • Youth Advisory Council: Attendance at quarterly meetings may be invited.
  • Orientation Program: Comprehensive program in summer/early fall 2024.
  • Collaboration: Work inclusively, cooperatively, and respectfully with other Board members, management, staff, and Youth Advisory Council members.
  • Reimbursement: Travel and related expenses will be covered.

Your Contribution

As the second Youth Board member, you will bring a unique perspective to our Board and work. This role offers personal growth, governance, advocacy, strategic planning, financial oversight, and leadership experience. You will help shape and guide the organization, contributing to international development and the empowerment of the communities we serve.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (completed or in progress).
  • Demonstrated leadership through personal and/or professional experience.
  • Positive, can-do attitude.
  • Commitment to children’s rights and equality for girls.
  • Interest in areas valuable to the Board such as financial matters, strategic planning, performance management, HR, risk management, fundraising, marketing, IT, and international development.
  • Strong judgment, strategic mindset, willingness to learn, and confidence to share unique perspectives.
  • Passion for mission-driven work and alignment with Plan International Canada’s core values.
  • Life experience in a developing country and/or non-profit experience is an asset.

Selection Process and Timeline

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2024
  • Short-listed Candidates: Confirmed by end of July 2024
  • Virtual Interviews: August 2024
  • Selected Candidate Confirmation: September 2024
  • Start Date: November 21, 2024 (with orientation and mentorship from September to November 2024)

Additional Information

Consistent with our Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy, the successful candidate must receive clearance by a police background check, including the vulnerable sector screen.
