MPI Europe Internships

The Migration Policy Institute Europe (MPI Europe), established in Brussels in 2011, is a nonprofit, independent research institute that aims to provide a better understanding of migration in Europe and thus promote effective policymaking. MPI Europe provides authoritative research and practical policy design to governmental and nongovernmental stakeholders who seek more effective management of immigration, immigrant integration, and asylum systems as well as successful outcomes for newcomers, families of immigrant background, and receiving communities in Europe.

The MPI Europe internship cycles generally run as follows:

  • Fall: September through end of February
  • Spring: March through August

Apply by June 3: Internship in Finance and Administration

MPI Europe is seeking candidates for a full-time, in-person internship in Brussels that offers a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and practical experience supporting operations and financial reporting. The internship, which will begin July 1, 2024, will last for six months. The successful candidate must be work authorized in Belgium. Applications are due by close of business June 3.

As our Accounting Intern, you will have the opportunity to get first-hand experience in contractual fund procedures and the control of expenditures within the framework of a variety of funding sources, in accordance with their financial regulations and MPI Europe procedures.

Duties

  • Accounting: Support accounts payable and receivable processes, including invoice processing and payment tracking
  • Finance: (1) Assist with financial record keeping, including data entry and maintaining spreadsheets; (2) Aid in preparing financial reports and presentations for review by management; (3) Prepare audit files
  • Projects: Systematization of document file classification
  • Procedures: Verification and updating of procedures related to the above tasks
  • Ensure compliance with contractual policies and regulatory requirements in financial recordkeeping and reporting
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts aimed at enhancing financial processes, systems, and tools
  • Provide administrative support, including data encoding and presentation of information in simple summary documents

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or other business-related field
  • Intermediate-level proficiency with Microsoft Office, in particular Excel, but also Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook
  • Ability to maintain required financial controls and support independent auditor requests as necessary
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (English is used by staff).
  • Work authorized in Belgium
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in languages other than English
  • Previous experience at European institutions and NGOs in Brussels.

Details and Conditions

The five-day work schedule represents 38 hours per week, in office. There is the potential for telework twice a week, after two months. The internship location: Rue de la Loi, 155 – 1040 – Etterbeek.

The successful candidate will be offered a “convencion d’immersion professionnelle” (or “beroepsinlevingsovereenkomst”), which foresees a payment of 1310,15 euros per month. Lunch vouchers of 8 euros per work day that can be used in grocery stores and most restaurants will be offered. Relocation expenses are not covered.

MPI Europe is not able to support with visa applications or work permits. Only applicants eligible to work in Belgium will be considered.
