About the MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP)

The MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) is a competitive summer initiative designed to promote the value of graduate education, broaden participation in the research enterprise, and prepare and recruit exceptional undergraduate students for graduate study at MIT and beyond.

Launched in 1986, the MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) was created to expand access to research opportunities for students whose educational journeys and experiences have not always aligned with traditional pathways into graduate education. The programme continues to foster a more inclusive academic environment by supporting students with diverse life experiences, academic interests, and educational backgrounds.

MSRP seeks to identify talented undergraduate students who would benefit from spending a summer on MIT’s campus, conducting research under the guidance of MIT faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students.

Students participating in the programme will be better prepared and motivated to pursue advanced degrees, helping to sustain a rich talent pool in critical areas of research and innovation.

For more information, visit the MIT Summer Research Program Overview.

MIT Summer Research Program 2027 Eligibility Requirements

The MIT Summer Research Program prioritises access for students with demonstrated need, particularly those for whom this opportunity can unlock their academic and research potential. The programme seeks to understand applicants’ educational journeys, available support systems, and how MSRP can accelerate their growth.

Students with a variety of life experiences are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly:

  • Students from non-traditional educational pathways, including those who have attended schools in rural, urban, or under-resourced communities, or institutions with lower rates of graduate school matriculation.
  • Students who have demonstrated strong academic potential by overcoming barriers such as economic, social, or educational disadvantage. This may include experiences related to financial aid eligibility, first-generation college status, or limited access to academic resources.
  • Students who have demonstrated skills and leadership in promoting belonging and inclusion in academic and research environments through mentoring, advocacy, community organising, peer support, or creating welcoming spaces.
  • Students with research interests focusing on underserved populations and understanding issues of inequalities.
