Who Can Apply for the YSEALI Academic Fellows Program?

Age Requirement

Applicants must generally be between 18 and 25 years old by October 12, 2026, which is the application deadline.

Citizenship Requirement

For the 2027 U.S.-based Academic Fellows Program, citizens of Myanmar and Laos are not eligible because of current visa restrictions. This restriction is based on citizenship and does not change based on the applicant’s country of residence.

Residency Requirement

Applicants must also be physically residing in an ASEAN member state as of October 12, 2026, and must remain resident in an ASEAN member state through the start of their selected fellowship.

Being a citizen of an eligible country is therefore not sufficient by itself. Applicants must meet both the citizenship and residency requirements.

Academic Requirement

Applicants must meet one of the following academic conditions:

• Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.
• Be enrolled as a part-time undergraduate student.
• Be enrolled as a graduate student.
• Have graduated with an undergraduate degree within the last four years.

English-Language Requirement

The fellowship is conducted entirely in English. Applicants must be proficient in:
