2027 MEXT Scholarships at the University of Osaka, Japan | Undergraduate and Graduate Opportunities
The University of Osaka (UOsaka) accepts international students who receive scholarships from the Japanese Government through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
For the 2027 intake, MEXT scholarship opportunities are available at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants can pursue the scholarship through two routes: Embassy Recommendation and University Recommendation.
About the MEXT Scholarship
The MEXT Scholarship is a Japanese Government scholarship programme for international students. At the University of Osaka, MEXT scholarship students can enter undergraduate programmes or pursue graduate-level research leading to master’s or doctoral studies.
At the graduate level, successful applicants usually begin as research students for approximately 6–12 months before proceeding to a master’s or doctoral course after passing the relevant entrance examination.
Study Levels
The opportunity covers:
- Undergraduate programmes
- Master’s programmes
- Doctoral programmes
At undergraduate level, applicants may apply through Embassy Recommendation or University Recommendation. University Recommendation applicants must first pass one of the eligible undergraduate programmes and then be selected as MEXT student candidates.
How to Apply
There are two main application routes:
1. Embassy Recommendation
Applicants are initially recruited and screened by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in their country.
For graduate applicants, the process includes the embassy’s first screening, followed by the process of obtaining a Letter of Acceptance from a Japanese university and subsequent MEXT and university procedures.
2. University Recommendation
Under the University Recommendation route, the University of Osaka recommends candidates to MEXT. This route is generally connected to universities and research institutions with which the University of Osaka has relevant agreements or collaborative research relationships.
September 1, 2026 Deadline
Applicants who have already passed the first screening by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General and wish to request a Letter of Acceptance from the University of Osaka must apply through the University’s Admissions Assistance Desk (AAD) system.
AAD Application Deadline for AY2027: September 1, 2026, Japan Time.
Applications received from September 2 onward will not be accepted.
It is important to note that this is the AAD Letter of Acceptance deadline, not a general deadline for all MEXT applicants.
Documents Required for the AAD Application
Applicants requesting a Letter of Acceptance through the AAD system must upload the required documents in PDF format, including:
- Application Form
- Field of Study and Research Plan
- Academic transcripts
- Certificate of graduation or degree
- Recommendation letter
- Medical certificate
- Language proficiency certificate, if available
- Passing Certificate of the First Screening issued by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General
Additional documents may apply depending on the applicant’s circumstances.
Documents that are not in Japanese or English must be accompanied by a translation into Japanese or English.
Important Information for Applicants
Approval through the AAD system does not itself mean that an applicant has received a Letter of Acceptance from a prospective supervisor.
After receiving the AAD application result, applicants must complete additional procedures, which may include an interview and screening by the prospective supervisor.
Applicants should therefore carefully follow the University’s official instructions and the requirements of their prospective graduate school or programme.
Where to Apply
Applicants who have passed the first embassy screening and need to request a Letter of Acceptance should use the University of Osaka Admissions Assistance Desk (AAD) system.

Conclusion

Prospective applicants should first determine which application route applies to them and carefully follow the relevant embassy, university and MEXT procedures. Graduate applicants who have already passed the first embassy screening should pay particular attention to the September 1, 2026 AAD deadline for requesting a Letter of Acceptance.
