Education has the power to shape not only academic success but also peaceful, inclusive, and just societies. The PeacEd Gateway (PEG) Peaceful Classroom Guide Pilot Study 2026 offers educators from around the world a unique opportunity to become part of an international research initiative that empowers young people to become peacebuilders while equipping teachers with innovative classroom practices.

The pilot study is organized by PeacEd Gateway (PEG), an initiative of Education for Global Peace (EGP), in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU) and the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

Selected educators will receive a USD 575 stipend, a Certificate of Participation, access to an innovative peace education curriculum, and the opportunity to collaborate with educators from different countries while contributing to internationally recognized educational research.

About PeacEd Gateway (PEG)

PeacEd Gateway (PEG) is an initiative of Education for Global Peace that seeks to transform education by ensuring that learners develop the knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills necessary to promote justice and peace within their schools, communities, and the wider world.

Rather than viewing education solely as academic instruction, PEG promotes learning that nurtures empathy, collaboration, global citizenship, well-being, and active community engagement.

About the Peaceful Classroom Guide

The Peaceful Classroom Guide is an English-language curriculum consisting of both a facilitator guide and learner workbook.

The curriculum provides both low technology and technology enhanced learning pathways, allowing educators from diverse educational settings to participate.

It is divided into three developmental levels:

  • Emerging Level (Primary/Elementary): Ages 7 to 9
  • Intermediate Level (Lower Secondary): Ages 10 to 13
  • Advanced Level (Upper Secondary): Ages 14 to 18

Each classroom activity is designed to last approximately 50 minutes, although educators can adapt the duration according to their classroom needs.

Curriculum Framework

The curriculum aligns with PEG’s Peacelearning Framework, focusing on six major pillars:

  • Well Being
  • Relationships and Communication
  • Environment and Nature
  • Diversity and Perspective
  • Global Citizenship
  • Empowerment and Service

These themes encourage learners to understand peace beyond the absence of conflict by promoting collaboration, justice, inclusion, and responsible citizenship.

What the Curriculum Covers

1. Foundations for the Peaceful Classroom

This introductory section contains three activities that help learners understand:

  • What peace looks like
  • What peace sounds like
  • What peace feels like
  • Critical peace education concepts
  • The Peacelearning Framework

2. Co Creating Peace Agreements

This section also includes three interactive activities where learners work together to:

  • Build classroom peace agreements
  • Practice shared decision making
  • Strengthen classroom relationships
  • Promote mutual respect
  • Develop a peaceful classroom culture

3. Classroom Connect

This is one of the most innovative components of the curriculum.

It includes:

  • Five classroom activities
  • Five Classroom Connect sessions
  • One learner survey

Learners participate in a “glocalized” peace and justice project based on Youth Led Participatory Action Research (yPAR).

Students collaborate with classrooms from different parts of the world through:

  • Live virtual sessions
  • Recorded video exchanges
  • Cross cultural discussions
  • Collaborative learning experiences

The objective is to help students connect local issues with global movements while strengthening intercultural understanding.

Pilot Study Commitments

Since this is an approved research study by the Arizona State University Institutional Review Board (IRB), participating educators will be expected to complete several responsibilities.

These include:

Curriculum Implementation

Teachers will:

  • Deliver the curriculum over approximately 8 to 10 weeks
  • Follow the implementation schedule alongside an assigned international educator triad

Communication and Coordination

Educators will:

  • Obtain school administrator approval
  • Coordinate parent or guardian consent
  • Collect learner assent
  • Work with the research team where translations are needed
  • Coordinate Classroom Connect activities with international partners

Research Participation

Teachers will also:

  • Upload required consent documentation
  • Submit classroom artifacts
  • Complete an educator survey (approximately 30 minutes)
  • Administer learner surveys (approximately 30 minutes)
  • Participate in a virtual educator focus group lasting approximately 90 minutes

2026 Pilot Study Timeline

The expected schedule includes:

  • Early August 2026: Educator consent and school administrator approval
  • Early to Mid September 2026: Parent or guardian consent and learner assent
  • Mid September or Early October to End of November 2026: Curriculum implementation, classroom artifact collection, and virtual observations where applicable
  • Mid November to Early December 2026: Educator survey, learner survey, and educator focus group

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should:

  • Be a teacher or educator.
  • Teach learners aged 7 to 18 years.
  • Use English as the primary classroom language.
  • Have support from school administrators where possible.
  • Be willing to discuss peace, justice, well-being, diversity, and global citizenship.
  • Be willing to implement the curriculum over an 8 to 10 week period.
  • Participate fully in the research process.
  • Coordinate with international educator partners.
  • Have access to Google Drive and video conferencing platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet.
  • Ideally have reliable internet access for Classroom Connect activities.
