Applications are officially open for young people from around the world who are already making a difference in their communities and are eager to strengthen their leadership skills, expand their global networks, and contribute to international efforts aimed at protecting our blue planet.
The World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council brings together a diverse group of 20–25 young leaders from different countries and backgrounds who are actively involved in conservation efforts. Since its establishment in 2016, the Council has played a significant role in advancing youth engagement and leadership within the global environmental movement.
About the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council
The World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council is a global network of young environmental leaders committed to ocean protection, climate action, and sustainable development. Council members collaborate throughout the year to share ideas, strengthen conservation initiatives, develop leadership skills, and inspire collective action for a healthier planet.
The Council supports the broader mission of World Ocean Day, which seeks to unite individuals, organizations, businesses, governments, and communities worldwide in taking meaningful action for the ocean. Given that the ocean covers approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface and plays a critical role in regulating climate systems, the Council focuses on empowering young people to become influential voices in environmental stewardship.
Over the years, the Youth Advisory Council has grown into a vibrant global network. The Youth Advisory Council Alumni Network currently includes 173 members representing 75 countries, demonstrating the program’s international reach and impact.

What Council Members Will Do
Members of the Youth Advisory Council are expected to continue their existing conservation work while contributing to broader global initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Deepen Community Impact
Council members will continue the conservation, advocacy, and environmental initiatives they are already leading in their communities while exploring ways to increase their effectiveness and reach.
2. Participate in Conservation Events
Members are encouraged to engage in ocean, climate, and environmental events throughout the year at local, national, regional, and international levels.
3. Serve as World Ocean Day Ambassadors
Council members act as ambassadors for World Ocean Day by promoting awareness and encouraging individuals and organizations to take action for ocean protection.
4. Collaborate with Global Peers
Participants work closely with fellow Council members and alumni on projects such as:
- Organizing events
- Developing educational resources
- Supporting conservation campaigns
- Creating community engagement initiatives
- Promoting youth-led environmental action
5. Provide Strategic Guidance
Members contribute ideas and perspectives that help shape the future direction of World Ocean Day and related conservation campaigns.
6. Participate in Public Awareness Campaigns
Council members may:
- Share environmental content through social media.
- Contribute blog posts highlighting community projects.
- Participate in social media takeovers.
- Engage in awareness and outreach campaigns.
Program Commitment
Applicants should be prepared to actively participate throughout the one-year term.
Commitment requirements include:
- One-year term lasting through June 2027.
- Attendance at a minimum of five virtual video conference meetings.
- Completion of three to four advisory surveys during the term.
- Regular communication through email and WhatsApp at least once or twice each month.
- Participation in the Youth Leadership Training Program.
- Engagement in regional hub development activities.
- Optional participation in collaborative projects with other Council members.
Youth Leadership Training Program

The training includes:
- Virtual leadership sessions.
- Weekly one-hour meetings.
- Additional 30-minute discussion sessions exclusively for Council members.
- Four-week training period scheduled for October/November 2026 (subject to change).

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be between 16 and 25 years old at the time of application.
- Be fluent in English.
- Have reliable internet access.
- Demonstrate previous conservation experience.
- Show commitment to environmental protection and climate action.
Advocacy and organizing experience are considered an added advantage but are not mandatory.

Stage 2: Application Deadline
Deadline: 2 August 2026
Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications well before the deadline.
Stage 3: Second-Round Notification
Candidates selected for the next stage will be notified on 10 August 2026.
Stage 4: Recommendation Letters
Second-round applicants will be required to provide recommendation letters from:
- Teachers
- Advisors
- Employers
- Other non-parent mentors
Stage 5: Final Selection
New Council members will be notified by late September 2026.
