The Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI) is offering an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and research-driven professional to join its Just Green Technology Transition Programme as a Research Fellow. This is a home-office-based role designed for experts in political economy, economics, energy policy, or industrial policy who are passionate about shaping Africa’s green industrial future.

The position focuses on bridging the gap between policy, financing mechanisms, and firm-level realities within African energy transition and industrial development systems. The selected Fellow will play a central role in producing high-quality research, engaging stakeholders across continents, and co-developing actionable policy frameworks that support African-led green industrialisation.

This is a 12-month full-time engagement with competitive remuneration, travel opportunities, and 30 vacation days.

About APRI (Africa Policy Research Institute)

APRI is an independent, nonpartisan policy institute that focuses on African development issues. It contributes to shaping German, European Union, and African policy debates by producing research outputs such as:

  • Policy briefs

Key Responsibilities of the Research Fellow

The Research Fellow will be responsible for leading and contributing to high-level policy research and stakeholder engagement activities. Key duties include:

1. Policy and Strategy Research

  • Conduct in-depth research on African industrial and energy strategies
  • Analyze policy instruments across African economies focusing on green energy and industrialisation
  • Study cooperation frameworks between Africa and global partners

2. Financing and Partnership Analysis

  • Evaluate international financing mechanisms and technology partnerships
  • Assess alignment between external investments and African industrial priorities
  • Study policy impact across macro, meso, and micro levels

3. Case Study Development

  • Produce detailed case studies of African firms, startups, and OEMs involved in green technology
  • Ground policy recommendations in real market and industry data

4. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Organize and facilitate high-level roundtables and policy dialogues
  • Engage stakeholders from Africa, Europe, and Asia
  • Build cross-regional expert networks for sustained collaboration

5. Research Outputs and Publications

  • Draft policy briefs and research publications with actionable recommendations
  • Contribute to donor reporting, monitoring, and evaluation documentation
  • Collaborate with international research partners on joint outputs

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in:
    • Political Economy
    • Economics
    • Energy Policy
    • Industrial Policy
  • 4–6 years of relevant professional experience in:
    • Policy research
    • Think tanks
    • Development research or related fields
  • Strong focus on African economic development or energy transition
  • Proven experience in qualitative research methods:
    • Policy analysis
    • Document review
    • Semi-structured interviews
    • Case study research
  • Strong writing skills (policy briefs, reports, or articles)
  • Experience engaging policymakers, diplomats, or industry actors
  • Fluency in English

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of international green industrial and energy partnerships
  • Experience with think tanks or international organizations
  • Existing networks in African ministries, firms, or industry bodies
  • Familiarity with EU–Africa energy and industrial policy relations

Key Competencies

  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills
  • Ability to connect policy frameworks with real-world implementation
  • Experience working in cross-regional research environments
  • Strong facilitation skills for workshops and high-level discussions
  • Commitment to African-centered policy perspectives
