CIFAR Horizon Networks 2026: International Research Funding Opportunity for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers
Spread the love

Applications are now open for the CIFAR Horizon Networks 2026, an exciting international research funding opportunity designed to support early- and mid-career researchers in building interdisciplinary and global research collaborations. Organised by Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, the Horizon Networks initiative aims to foster innovative research communities that can shape emerging fields of inquiry and establish the next generation of global thought leaders.

The programme provides selected research teams with collaborative funding, professional development opportunities, international networking, and logistical support over a three-year period. Through Horizon Networks, researchers from diverse disciplines and institutions can work together to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges in education, childhood development, identity, technology, and civic engagement.

About CIFAR

Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, widely known as CIFAR, is a globally recognised research organisation headquartered in Canada. CIFAR brings together leading researchers from around the world to collaborate across disciplines and generate transformative ideas capable of solving complex global challenges.

Supported by the governments of Canada, Alberta, and Québec, alongside international foundations, corporations, and partner organisations, CIFAR has built a strong reputation for advancing groundbreaking research and supporting academic innovation on a global scale.

The organisation is particularly known for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and creating environments where researchers can develop bold and innovative ideas that may not emerge within traditional academic structures.

What Are Horizon Networks?

Horizon Networks are collaborative international research networks led by early- to mid-career researchers. These networks are designed to:

  • Build emerging interdisciplinary research communities
  • Explore new fields of inquiry
  • Strengthen international academic collaboration
  • Develop future research leaders
  • Encourage innovative thinking across disciplines

Each selected Horizon Network will operate over a three-year term and receive support from CIFAR to pursue collaborative research activities.

What the Programme Offers

Selected Horizon Networks receive extensive support and funding, including:

Three-Year Research Network Support

Networks operate over a three-year period with long-term collaborative engagement among members.

In-Person Meetings

Network members meet twice per year in person, with all logistics, financial arrangements, and administrative coordination managed by CIFAR.

Collaborative Research Funding

Each Horizon Network receives funding distributed across the team to support collaborative research activities and network initiatives.

Flexible Fund Management

While CIFAR distributes the funding, Horizon Network leads are responsible for allocating and managing the funds among team members.

Professional Development

All network members participate in annual professional development opportunities designed to strengthen leadership, collaboration, and research impact.

International and Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Researchers gain access to international academic networks and interdisciplinary partnerships that can significantly enhance research visibility and long-term career growth.

Eligibility Requirements

The Horizon Networks programme specifically targets emerging research leaders and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Leadership Requirements

Each network must be co-led by researchers who are alumni of CIFAR’s early-career leadership programmes.

Team Composition

Each Horizon Network may include:

  • Up to eight additional early- to mid-career faculty members
  • Researchers from diverse institutions and disciplines
  • Individuals who may not have previously participated in CIFAR programmes

Institutional Diversity

Network co-leaders are encouraged to recruit members from a broad range of institutions to ensure diversity of perspectives and expertise.

Current Horizon Networks Streams for 2026

Applicants must submit proposals under one of the following thematic streams.

Stream 1: Belonging with Nature, Technology and People in Early Childhood

Supported by the Bezos Family Foundation, this stream explores how children’s relationships with nature, technology, and social environments shape development and belonging during early childhood.

Stream 2: Adolescence – Belonging, Identity and Civic Engagement in a Changing World

Also supported by the Bezos Family Foundation, this stream focuses on adolescent identity formation, civic participation, and social belonging in rapidly evolving societal contexts.

Stream 3: Education and Learning Variability Between Ages 2–12

This stream is supported by the Jacobs CIFAR Research Fellowship programme and must be co-led by current or former Jacobs CIFAR Research Fellows. The stream investigates learning variability and educational development among children aged 2 to 12.

Why This Opportunity Matters

The Horizon Networks programme stands out because it empowers researchers at relatively early stages of their careers to:

  • Lead international research collaborations
  • Shape emerging academic fields
  • Develop leadership and management skills
  • Build influential research communities
  • Access international visibility and funding opportunities

Rather than supporting individual projects alone, the programme invests in building sustainable research ecosystems that can continue generating impact beyond the funding period.

Review and Selection Process

Applications undergo a multi-stage review process.

Eligibility Screening

CIFAR staff first review all submissions to ensure eligibility requirements are met.

Reciprocal Peer Review

Applicants also participate in a reciprocal peer review process, where proposed Horizon Network leads review and evaluate other applications.

Final Decision

Final funding decisions are made by CIFAR together with funding partners where applicable.

Applicants submitting proposals agree to:

  • Review assigned proposals
  • Participate in peer evaluation
  • Engage in the collaborative assessment process

Applications are scored using a rubric aligned with the official selection criteria.
