Fully Funded PhD in Parenting and Hope at the University of Amsterdam 2026

Applications are now open for a fully funded PhD position in Parenting in Times of Uncertainty at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

This exciting doctoral opportunity is part of the ERC-funded PARENTALHOPE project, which explores how hope shapes parenting behaviour and decision-making in uncertain environments. The research seeks to understand why some parents become more protective during uncertain times, while others encourage exploration and independence in their children.

The selected PhD candidate will join a leading international research environment at the Research Institute of Child Development and Education (RICDE) and work closely with renowned researcher Prof. Patty Leijten.

About the PhD Project

The project focuses on the psychology of hope, parenting, and uncertainty across different cultural contexts. It aims to investigate how parents respond when children’s futures feel unpredictable and what psychological mechanisms influence these parenting choices.

This research will contribute to broader discussions in developmental psychology, family studies, and behavioural science.

What the PhD Candidate Will Do

The successful applicant will:

• Design and manage a cross-national longitudinal study across the Netherlands, Estonia, and Portugal
• Conduct experimental laboratory studies
• Analyse advanced quantitative datasets
• Publish academic papers in peer-reviewed journals
• Present findings at international conferences and events

Research Focus Areas

The PhD will examine questions such as:

• When do parents become more protective?
• When do parents encourage exploration and independence?
• How does hope influence parenting behaviour under uncertainty?

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have:

• A master’s degree in:
  • Psychology (developmental, social, family psychology)
  • Pedagogy
  • Or a related field
• Strong quantitative research and analytical skills

• Scientific writing experience
• Ability to work collaboratively in research teams
