The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Kyoto University has officially opened applications for its 2027 Fellowship Program. This prestigious opportunity invites accomplished scholars and professionals to engage in advanced, multidisciplinary research in one of Japan’s most intellectually vibrant environments.

About the CSEAS Fellowship
Established in 1975, the CSEAS visiting scholarship program has supported over 450 scholars, many of whom are leading experts in their fields. The fellowship is designed to promote innovative research on Southeast Asia from comparative, historical, and global perspectives.
CSEAS welcomes individuals working on regional and cross-disciplinary topics, providing a collaborative platform for intellectual exchange and academic growth.
Each year, up to 14 fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis, with durations ranging from 3 to 6 months.
Fellowship Slots and Periods (2027)
Successful applicants can begin their fellowship during one of the following periods:
- March 1, 2027
- April 1, 2027
- May 1, 2027
- June 1, 2027
Note:
- CSEAS may adjust your proposed period depending on availability.
- Fellows may start on dates other than the 1st of the month if necessary.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the CSEAS Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be an accomplished scholar of high standing
- Be under 65 years of age at the time of appointment (exceptions may apply)
- Hold a PhD (unless prior approval is granted by a CSEAS faculty member)
- Not be currently enrolled in a graduate or postdoctoral program
- Have at least six years since a previous CSEAS fellowship (if applicable)
Additional notes:
- The librarian fellowship is open only to experienced librarians
- The program also welcomes professionals such as journalists, NGO workers, government officials, IT specialists, and public intellectuals for short-term research visits
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows will receive:
- A stipend covering international travel and living expenses in Kyoto
- Research funding to support academic work
- Additional funding for domestic travel (subject to regulations)
- Access to CSEAS’ extensive academic resources and networks
- Opportunities to participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops
Fellows are required to:
- Reside in Kyoto for the duration of the fellowship
- Deliver a public lecture during their stay
- Engage with CSEAS academic publications and research community

All applications must be submitted online and include the following documents:

- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 5 pages, including publications)
- Research Plan (maximum 2 pages, double-spaced, using the official template)
- Two Recommendation Letters
- Referees must send letters directly via email on official letterhead
