What is the Knight Cities Challenge?
The Knight Cities Challenge (KCC) is an open grant competition aimed at democratizing access to funding by inviting anyone with a strong idea—individuals, nonprofits, and organizations—to apply.
This initiative builds on years of successful open innovation programs led by the Knight Foundation, focusing on empowering local communities to solve their own challenges through creativity and collaboration.
For 2026, the program will fund a new cohort of projects that are:
- Community-centered
- Innovative and scalable
- Designed to create long-term local impact
Funding Details and Project Scope
Selected applicants will receive:
- 💰 Up to $200,000 in grant funding per project
- 🗓️ Project timeline: Must be completed within one year

Focus Areas for 2026
All project ideas must align with at least one of the following priority areas:

Who Can Apply?

- No requirement to be a previous grant recipient
- Applicants do not need to be a nonprofit

However, projects must benefit one of Knight Foundation’s 26 communities, which include cities like:

Application Process
Applying is straightforward and designed to encourage participation:
