What is the Knight Cities Challenge?

The Knight Cities Challenge (KCC) is an open grant competition aimed at democratizing access to funding by inviting anyone with a strong idea—individuals, nonprofits, and organizations—to apply.

This initiative builds on years of successful open innovation programs led by the Knight Foundation, focusing on empowering local communities to solve their own challenges through creativity and collaboration.

For 2026, the program will fund a new cohort of projects that are:

  • Community-centered
  • Innovative and scalable
  • Designed to create long-term local impact
