About the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA)

The Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA) is a three-year collaborative project launched by the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU). Its main objective is to support AU member states in integrating and implementing the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) at the national level.

The project is implemented by a consortium of leading organizations:

  • The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) (lead organization)
  • The African Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF)
  • The Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR)

Together, these institutions work to promote justice, accountability, and sustainable peace across Africa.

Overview of the Communications Fellowship

The Communications Fellowship is designed to support ITJA’s visibility and outreach efforts while building the fellow’s professional capacity in strategic communications.

The selected fellow will work closely with:

  • ITJA leadership
  • ICTJ Communications Team
  • Programme teams across the consortium

The role focuses on creating, managing, and disseminating content that reflects the project’s impact and engages stakeholders across Africa and globally.

Fellowship Duration and Structure

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Start Date: Immediate upon selection
  • Mode: Flexible (virtual or in-person elements depending on activities)

The fellowship offers a structured yet dynamic work environment, allowing the fellow to contribute meaningfully to ongoing projects.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Fellow will play a central role in shaping how ITJA communicates its work. Responsibilities include:

Content Creation and Social Media Management

  • Draft content for platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and X
  • Ensure alignment with donor communication guidelines

Event Communications Support

  • Prepare invitations and promotional materials
  • Provide live coverage during events (posts, stories, photography)
  • Draft press releases and post-event summaries

Performance Monitoring

  • Track and analyze social media engagement metrics

Content Adaptation

  • Transform long-form publications (reports, policy briefs) into accessible formats

Visual Content Development

  • Create infographics and visual materials showcasing project outcomes

Editorial Support

  • Proofread and format publications
  • Draft website articles and program highlights

Additional Support

  • Assist the communications team with various tasks as needed

Financial Support

The selected fellow will receive a monthly stipend for the entire six-month duration. This ensures financial support while gaining valuable professional experience.

Eligibility Criteria and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Educational Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Communications
    • Journalism
    • International Relations
    • Or a related field
  • A Master’s degree is also accepted

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience in communications within development, governance, or human rights sectors
  • Familiarity with design tools such as:
    • Canva
    • Adobe Creative Suite

Additional Requirements

  • Demonstrated interest in transitional justice and human rights
  • Proficiency in English (mandatory)
  • Additional languages (French, Portuguese, or Arabic) are an advantage
