What Is the Erasmus Mundus MESPOM Master’s Programme?

MESPOM is an international joint master’s programme focused on environmental sciences, policy, and management. It is designed for students who want to understand and address environmental sustainability problems through a combination of scientific analysis, policy development, management practices, and practical engagement.

Environmental challenges rarely fall neatly within a single academic discipline. Issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource depletion, and unsustainable production and consumption can involve scientific processes, political decisions, economic incentives, social inequalities, and institutional responsibilities.

MESPOM addresses this complexity through a multidisciplinary curriculum that encourages students to connect theory with practice. Students develop the ability to analyse environmental issues rigorously while considering the different social, geographical, and institutional settings in which these problems arise.

The programme also emphasises the importance of understanding environmental challenges in an international context. Its four university partners bring different geographical perspectives and complementary areas of expertise, exposing students to approaches associated with Scandinavian, Mediterranean, and British environmental studies and practice.

In addition to academic coursework, students develop research and communication capabilities and engage with real-world professional environments. The programme also seeks to help students build connections with environmental professionals and develop career strategies suited to their interests and ambitions.

MESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree. The programme announcement identifies several forms of financial assistance, but applicants must distinguish between admission to the programme and receiving a particular form of financial support.

Why Study Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management?

Environmental sustainability requires professionals who can understand environmental processes while also engaging with policy, institutions, businesses, and communities. Scientific knowledge is essential, but addressing environmental problems may also require effective regulation, management, communication, and collaboration.

MESPOM is designed to develop this combination of capabilities.

1. A multidisciplinary approach to environmental challenges

Students are exposed to environmental issues through scientific, social, policy, and management perspectives. This approach can help them understand why environmental problems emerge, how they affect different groups, and what types of interventions may be appropriate in particular settings.

Rather than focusing exclusively on one technical or academic specialisation, the programme encourages students to integrate knowledge from different disciplines.

2. International academic experience

The programme involves four universities in different European countries. Students encounter diverse geographical perspectives and complementary areas of academic and professional expertise.

This international structure is intended to broaden students’ understanding of environmental sustainability and provide opportunities to engage with different approaches to environmental policy, science, and management.

3. Research and analytical skills

MESPOM aims to strengthen students’ capacity to conduct rigorous analysis of environmental issues. Research skills are relevant to a range of possible careers, including environmental policy, academic research, consulting, programme evaluation, and sustainability management.

Students can develop the ability to investigate complex problems, assess evidence, communicate findings, and consider the implications of different environmental interventions.

4. Practical and professional engagement

The programme incorporates internships and engagement with real-life practice in organisations such as businesses, government institutions, nonprofit organisations, and academic settings.

This practical dimension is intended to complement academic study and help students understand how environmental knowledge is applied in professional environments.

The precise internship arrangements and available host organisations should be confirmed through the programme’s official information.

5. Professional networks and career development

MESPOM connects students with an international community of environmental professionals. Its 11 Associated Partners link the programme to academic and professional networks across nine countries and four continents.

Students are encouraged to learn how to navigate these networks and develop effective career strategies. Such exposure may be valuable for graduates interested in international environmental work, public policy, research, sustainability management, and related fields.

MESPOM Programme Structure: What Students Study Over Two Years

The MESPOM programme lasts 24 months and comprises 120 ECTS credits. The curriculum is organised across four academic terms, with different consortium universities hosting specific parts of the programme.

Students also complete a summer internship and undertake a master’s thesis during the final term.

The programme structure allows students to experience different academic environments while progressively developing their knowledge of environmental science, policy, management, and specialist topics.

First year, fall and winter: Central European University, Vienna, Austria

The fall and winter terms of the first year take place at Central European University in Vienna, Austria.

Students begin with an introductory module before progressing to advanced elective courses. These courses address contemporary environmental sustainability challenges and cross-cutting competencies.

The initial stage establishes a foundation for the programme and prepares students to engage with more specialised environmental topics. It also introduces the multidisciplinary approach that underpins MESPOM’s curriculum.

The emphasis on cross-cutting competencies is intended to support students in applying their knowledge to complex problems that require more than a single disciplinary perspective.

First year, spring: University of the Aegean, Lesvos, Greece

The spring term takes place at the University of the Aegean on the Greek island of Lesvos.

This part of the programme includes environmental science courses related to:

  • Land management.
  • Water management.
  • Ecosystems management.
  • Sustainable tourism.

These subject areas allow students to explore environmental systems and the management challenges associated with land, water, ecosystems, and tourism.

The combination of environmental science and management helps students consider how natural resources and human activities interact, and how decisions can affect environmental sustainability.

First year, summer: Supervised internships

During the summer, students undertake internships supervised by MESPOM faculty. Internships are hosted by Associated Partners or other organisations.

The internship component provides an opportunity to connect academic learning with professional practice. Depending on the host organisation and the placement, students may gain exposure to the practical contexts in which environmental knowledge is used.

The programme announcement identifies businesses, government, nonprofit organisations, and academia as settings in which students may engage with real-life practice. Specific placement opportunities, host organisations, responsibilities, and selection arrangements should be confirmed with the programme.

Second year, fall: Lund University or the University of Manchester

During the fall term of the second year, students study at one of two consortium institutions, following a different specialist focus at each university.

Option 1: Lund University, Sweden

Students at Lund University study at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics. The focus is on Environment, Industry and Products.

This pathway offers an environment for examining environmental issues connected to industrial activity, products, and the relationship between economic activity and environmental sustainability.

Option 2: University of Manchester, United Kingdom

Students at the University of Manchester study at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, focusing on Environment and Pollution Control.

This pathway centres on environmental issues associated with pollution and its control.

The choice between these study locations should be considered in relation to the student’s academic interests and professional objectives. Applicants should consult the programme’s official curriculum and admissions information for the current arrangements governing specialisation choices.

Second year, final term: Master’s thesis

The fourth term is dedicated to the master’s thesis. Students may complete this term at any of the consortium partners, according to their academic and professional interests.

The thesis provides an opportunity to investigate a particular environmental issue in greater depth and demonstrate the ability to conduct independent academic work.

Applicants interested in a particular environmental topic should consider how the programme’s interdisciplinary structure and the expertise available across its partner universities may relate to their intended research interests.

The exact thesis requirements, supervision arrangements, assessment procedures, and submission deadlines should be checked through the programme’s official academic information.

Environmental Specialisations and Research Areas

Throughout the programme, MESPOM students engage with contemporary environmental challenges and may specialise in areas that reflect their academic and professional interests.

The programme announcement identifies several cutting-edge topics:

Sustainable energy and climate change

This area concerns environmental sustainability in relation to energy systems and climate change. Students interested in this field may wish to explore the policy, scientific, and management dimensions of energy transitions and climate-related challenges.

Biodiversity and conservation

Biodiversity and conservation focus on the protection of biological diversity and the management of environmental systems. This area may interest applicants seeking to understand conservation challenges and the relationship between ecosystems and human activities.

Urban sustainability

Urban sustainability addresses environmental challenges associated with cities and urban development. Relevant issues can involve the management of resources, environmental quality, infrastructure, and the sustainability of urban systems.

Sustainable consumption and production

This area examines how goods and services are produced and consumed, and how these activities relate to environmental sustainability. It is relevant to discussions of resource use, production systems, consumption patterns, and environmental impacts.

Environmental security and justice

Environmental security and justice concern the relationship between environmental conditions, human well-being, institutions, and questions of fairness. This area may be relevant to applicants interested in how environmental problems affect different communities and how environmental decisions are governed.

These topics illustrate the programme’s breadth. They are not presented here as a separate list of guaranteed degree specialisations; applicants should review the current curriculum to understand the courses, pathways, and research opportunities available for the 2027–2029 intake.

Who Can Apply for the MESPOM 2027–2029 Master’s Programme?

MESPOM invites applications from candidates from all countries who meet the academic and English-language requirements.

Applicants should have a good first degree, such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, in a subject related to environmental sciences, policy, or management. Relevant backgrounds may include natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, or management.

The programme also considers candidates with other first degrees if they can demonstrate a commitment to environmental challenges, usually through voluntary or professional work.

Admission is highly competitive. The selection process considers academic and intellectual excellence, motivation, and prior experience, in addition to whether applicants meet the stated entry requirements.

Academic qualifications

The programme announcement specifies that applicants should have:

  • A good first degree, such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • A stated GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • A degree in a field related to environmental sciences, policy, or management, including relevant areas of the natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, or management.

Candidates whose first degrees are in other fields may also be considered if they demonstrate a commitment to environmental challenges, usually through voluntary or professional experience.

Applicants should consult the official MESPOM eligibility requirements to confirm how their qualifications will be assessed and whether any additional conditions apply.

English-language proficiency

All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English.

The supplied programme announcement does not specify particular accepted English-language tests, minimum scores, exemptions, or documentation requirements. Candidates should check the official admissions information for the current English-language requirements before applying.

Motivation and relevant experience

MESPOM’s admissions process is highly competitive and considers applicants’ motivation and prior experience, alongside academic and intellectual excellence.

Candidates should therefore review the programme carefully and be prepared to explain their interest in environmental sustainability, policy, science, or management and how the programme relates to their academic and professional goals.

The announcement does not prescribe a minimum number of years of professional experience or state that work experience is compulsory for every applicant. Candidates with nontraditional academic backgrounds should pay particular attention to the programme’s guidance on demonstrating commitment to environmental challenges.

Nationality and geographic eligibility

The programme invites applications from all countries. The announcement does not identify a nationality-based restriction on admission.

However, the relevant application deadline can differ depending on whether the applicant is seeking financial aid and whether the applicant falls within the programme’s stated visa-related categories. Applicants must check the applicable deadline and entry requirements rather than assuming that the same arrangements apply to everyone.

Is the MESPOM Programme Fully Funded?

MESPOM offers several forms of financial assistance, including partial tuition fee waivers and living stipends for outstanding students.

However, the programme announcement does not state that every admitted student will receive a full scholarship covering all tuition fees and living expenses. Applicants should therefore distinguish between applying for admission, being considered for financial aid, and receiving a particular funding package.

Candidates who require financial support should investigate the available options and submit their applications by the financial aid deadline.

Financial assistance available

The programme announcement identifies two forms of support:

  • Partial tuition fee waivers: These may reduce the tuition fees payable by eligible recipients.
  • Living stipends: These provide living-cost support for outstanding students who receive the relevant assistance.

The supplied announcement does not state the precise value, number, duration, or eligibility conditions of each form of assistance. It also does not confirm that financial assistance will cover every cost associated with studying in Europe.

Applicants should review the official MESPOM financial assistance information for details of available funding options, conditions, and any additional sources of support.

Which deadline applies to applicants seeking financial aid?

Candidates applying for financial aid must submit their applications by 7 January 2027.

Applicants who need funding should not assume that they can wait until the later deadlines available to certain self-financing applicants. The financial aid deadline is earlier and should be treated as the relevant date for applicants seeking this assistance.

Can self-financing students apply later?

Yes. The programme lists later deadlines for self-financing applicants, depending on their visa circumstances:

  • 15 April 2027: Self-financing applicants except those from the programme’s designated visa-sensitive countries.
  • 15 July 2027: Self-financing applicants eligible for visa-free entry to Austria, including EU/EEA applicants and applicants from other countries listed in the official visa-free-entry information.

Applicants must confirm which category applies to them using the official admissions calendar and linked country lists. They should not infer their deadline from nationality alone without checking the relevant requirements.

MESPOM Application Deadlines for 2027–2029

The programme lists three application deadlines. The applicable date depends on the applicant’s funding status and visa-related circumstances.

Applicant category Application deadline
Applicants applying for financial aid 7 January 2027
Self-financing applicants, except those from visa-sensitive countries 15 April 2027
Self-financing applicants eligible for visa-free entry to Austria, including EU/EEA applicants and other listed countries 15 July 2027

Important: These deadlines are not interchangeable. Candidates should check their circumstances against the official application deadlines and admissions calendar.

The programme announcement also links to a list of visa-sensitive countries for the relevant admissions period and a document concerning visa-free entry to Austria. Applicants should consult the current official lists to determine which deadline applies.

The supplied announcement does not state a specific submission time for each deadline. Applicants should check the online application system and official admissions guidance for any applicable time-zone or submission-time requirements.
