What is the IJC Community Fellowship?

The IJC Community Fellowship is a structured, paid program designed to recruit recent college graduates and immerse them in frontline immigration advocacy. Fellows are placed within highly respected legal service organizations, where they directly support underserved immigrant populations.

Currently, IJC hosts over 130 fellows across more than 30 U.S. states, contributing significantly to expanding access to justice.

The 2026 cohort introduces a unique opportunity with three-year placements, allowing fellows to develop expertise, build professional networks, and achieve formal accreditation in immigration legal practice.

Fellowship Structure and Professional Development

The Community Fellowship is carefully designed to provide both practical experience and professional certification.

Accreditation Pathway

Fellows are expected to progress through the U.S. Department of Justice Recognition & Accreditation Program:

• Partial Accreditation: Achieved within the first year (ideally within 6–12 months), enabling fellows to represent clients before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
• Full Accreditation: Targeted between 12–18 months, allowing fellows to practice before Immigration Courts.

This structured pathway ensures that fellows graduate with strong legal competencies and recognized credentials.

Key Responsibilities of Community Fellows

Placement Locations

Fellows must be willing to relocate to their assigned location. While some placements may offer hybrid work arrangements, fully remote participation is not available.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be current undergraduate students graduating by Spring 2026 or recent graduates (no earlier than Spring 2024)
• Hold an Associate or Bachelor’s degree
• Be eligible for work authorization in the United States for the full duration of the fellowship
• Demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional language
• Spanish (including indigenous dialects) is strongly preferred

Applicants with DACA or TPS status are encouraged to apply.

• Unofficial academic transcripts
• Statement of Interest (maximum 500 words)
