The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established in 2015 to highlight the pivotal role that journalism plays in educating the public about cancer research, treatment, and advocacy. This prestigious award, supported by a bequest from Dr. June L. Biedler, honors professional journalists who have created compelling stories that deepen the public’s understanding of cancer and its related issues.

Prize Overview

The prize offers a $5,000 cash award and a commemorative plaque to the winning journalist. Since its inception, 49 journalists worldwide have been honored with this award, which underscores the importance of clear, accurate, and impactful reporting on cancer topics.

Who Can Apply?

The award is open to professional journalists across print, broadcast, and online platforms, whose work is aimed at lay public audiences. Submissions must have been first published or broadcast between December 1, 2023, and November 30, 2024. Up to two additional contributors can share in the recognition, with each receiving a commemorative award. Trade publications and organizational submissions are not eligible.

Categories

Journalists can apply in the following categories:

  • Print and Online: Newspapers, magazines, online platforms
  • Broadcast: Television, radio, podcasts

Each submission is eligible for only one category, which must be specified during the application process.

Application Instructions

Applicants must submit their work using the AACR’s electronic award platform by Monday, December 9, 2024. Submissions must include:

  • Applicant details and category selection
  • A 200-word Impact Statement detailing the work’s contribution to cancer education
  • An electronic version of the work, with an English translation for non-English pieces

Judging Criteria

A panel of experts—including journalists, researchers, and patient advocates—will evaluate submissions based on:

  • Ability to educate the public about cancer and its related fields
  • Accuracy and clarity in presenting complex science or policy issues
  • Significance and timeliness of the subject matter
  • Creativity and clarity of storytelling
  • Overall impact on public understanding of cancer

Awardees will be able to accept the prize during the AACR Annual Meeting 2025.
