The Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) Data Science Fellowship is an exciting opportunity designed to develop emerging data science professionals across Africa. This fellowship aims to equip participants with the skills and experience needed to tackle pressing challenges at the intersection of climate and health, making a meaningful impact on communities throughout the continent.

About the Fellowship

The CAN Fellowship provides a unique platform for data science professionals to collaborate with host institutions and mentors on impactful projects. Throughout the program, fellows will not only enhance their data science expertise but also contribute to innovative solutions that address key issues in sustainable development. The fellowship includes hands-on project work, media training, and opportunities to present at local, regional, and international events, thereby building a robust network of data professionals dedicated to making a difference.

Program Highlights

  • Duration: Six months (October 2024 – March 2025)
  • Focus: Data science applications in health, climate, and related fields
  • Participants: 100-200 data practitioners over three years
  • Opportunities: Practical project experience, media training, and event presentations
  • Stipend: Monthly stipend provided
  • Location: Fellows will be based within a government department or SIO office during the assignment period

Who Should Apply?

The fellowship is open to data science professionals who meet the following criteria:

  • A completed first university degree
  • Capacity for independent academic research and study
  • At least three years of experience in data management, analysis, and visualization
  • Strong communication skills and expertise in technology and data science
  • A working knowledge of African contexts related to climate and health

Applications are now open and will close on September 6th, 2024. This is a full-time position starting in October 2024 and ending in March 2025. Applicants are expected to be physically present within the assigned government department or SIO office during the fellowship.
