Apply for the 2024 Andrew E. Rice Award: Recognizing Young Leaders in International Development

The Andrew E. Rice Award for Leadership and Innovation by a Young Professional in International Development honors an outstanding young leader dedicated to advancing international development. Established in 2003, the Rice Award (formerly the Truman Award) celebrates exceptional achievements in leadership, innovation, and commitment to sustainable, people-centered development.

About the Award

Named after Andrew E. Rice, a visionary founder of the Society for International Development (SID), the Rice Award recognizes individuals who embody Rice’s legacy of promoting and mentoring youth in the field. Rice’s contributions include building SID into a global network, initiating the first newsletter and journal on international development, and supporting development initiatives like the U.S. Peace Corps.

Timeline

  • Application Deadline: September 9, 2024
  • Winner Notification: Week of October 7, 2024
  • Annual Dinner: November 13, 2024

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be between 22 and 32 years old
  • Have at least two years of experience in international development, either as a volunteer or paid professional
  • Submit all application materials by September 9, 2024
  • Be available to accept the award in person or remotely on November 13, 2024

Application Requirements

Submit the following by the deadline

  1. Application Form: Apply here
  2. Resume or CV (maximum of three pages, single-sided)
  3. Personal Statement (maximum of two pages, 12 pt. font, single-sided) addressing:
    • Demonstration of creativity and innovation in advancing international development
    • Vision and experience in leading people and change
    • Qualitative and/or quantitative measures of the impact of your work
    • Commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and participatory development
    • Efforts to advance the profession of international development

Ensure all documents are complete and submitted on time. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Save your progress if needed and complete your application later using the Save button.

Optional Components

  1. Up to 2 Letters of Recommendation (one page each) including:
    • How long and in what capacity the reference has known you.
    • The qualities and experiences that make you distinct in the criteria areas.
    • Why you should be selected for the Andrew E. Rice Award

    Letters of recommendation must be received by Monday, September 9, 2024. No letters of recommendation arriving after the award deadline will be reviewed. Please ensure that your full name appears on the personal statement as well as on the letters of recommendation.

  2. Short Video (up to 1 minute) demonstrating how your innovation and creativity contribute to sustainable international development.

Award Details

  • Date of Presentation: November 13, 2024, at the SID-US Annual Dinner in Washington, DC
  • Prize Includes:
    • An inscribed plaque
    • $1,000
    • A one-year honorary membership to SID-United States
    • Opportunity to present your work at a SID-United States event

The selection committee includes distinguished international development professionals and young leaders from the field.
