UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2024

Since 1967, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes have been awarded to celebrate excellence and innovation in literacy. To date, 512 projects and programs from governments, NGOs, and individuals worldwide have been recognized. These prestigious prizes aim to support effective literacy practices and promote vibrant literate societies.

Prizes Overview

UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize Established in 1989 with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea, this prize emphasizes mother language-based literacy development. Each prizewinner receives a medal, diploma, and US$20,000.

UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy Established in 2005 with support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, this prize focuses on functional literacy and leveraging technology for adults in rural areas and out-of-school youth. Each prizewinner receives a medal, diploma, and US$30,000.

Application and Nomination Process

The 2024 call for applications is open until July 19. Applicants must submit proposals related to the theme “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace” and consider the specific focuses of the two prizes.

Member States and International Non-Governmental Organizations in official relations with UNESCO are invited to solicit and submit nominations.

Selection Timeline

• June: Launch of the call for nominations
• July: Deadline for online submissions and international jury meeting
• August: Announcement of prize winners
• September: Award ceremony in Yaoundé, Cameroon

How to Apply

Applicants must go through a two-stage process: application and nomination. Applications are reviewed based on several criteria, including relevance to the theme, impact, innovation, and sustainability. Eligible projects should demonstrate a proven track record in literacy innovation and meet other specified criteria.
