Job Description

Position: Pacific Youth Coordinator, Wetlands (PYCW)
Programme: Island and Ocean Ecosystems
Team: Coastal and Marine
Reports to: Coastal and Marine Adviser
Date: May 2024

Job Purpose

The role of the Pacific Youth Coordinator, Wetlands, is designed to:

  • Establish and support a youth network focusing on wetlands in the Pacific Islands region.
  • Provide professional experience and development opportunities for young Pacific Island graduates.
  • Strengthen the capacity of young professionals in Pacific Island countries who are part of the Ramsar Convention.
  • Promote awareness and understanding of the Ramsar Convention and its activities.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Networking, Partnerships, and Collaboration
    • Work with Pacific Ramsar Contracting Parties to establish and support a youth network.
    • Collaborate with the Pacific Islands Nature Conference Coordinator (PINCC) to develop skills and knowledge of youth engaged in wetland activities.
    • Support the Convention of Wetlands Youth Working Group (YWG) and coordinate with the Convention Secretariat and the Australian National Youth Focal Point to implement the Youth Workplan.
    • Promote the Convention and raise awareness about its activities at the regional level.
    • Coordinate regional initiatives as requested by the Oceania regional representative.
  2. Meetings and Reporting
    • Support the Oceania regional representative for the Convention’s Standing Committee (2023-2025) in Convention activities, including reporting requirements.
    • Assist Pacific Parties with the youth-related sections of national reports for COP15 (October 2024).
    • Participate in relevant Convention meetings and provide updates to the Oceania regional representative.
    • Host meetings with youth engaged in wetlands in the Pacific Islands region to facilitate the Youth Workplan.
  3. Communications, Awareness, and Capacity Building
    • Collaborate with the SPREP Communications and Outreach team to develop awareness materials.
    • Build strong communication networks between Pacific youth and other youth networks (e.g., Youth Working Group, Youth Engaged in Wetlands, Global Biodiversity Youth Network).
    • Enhance the capacity, skills, and knowledge of Pacific youth through training, workshops, research, and project opportunities.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Age & Nationality Requirement: Must be 18-32 years old and a national of a Pacific Island country or territory.
  • Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Science, Natural Resource Management, Business Management and Administration, or a relevant field.
  • Experience: At least two years of relevant practical experience in environmental work, with a focus on youth engagement, partnership coordination, fundraising, project management, and reporting.
  • Skills: Excellent communication skills in English, experience with media and promotion, strong organizational and time management skills, advanced computer skills, and the ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.

Additional Information

Duty Station: Apia, Samoa
Duration: 1 year (12 months)
Salary: SAT58,136 per annum
Housing Assistance: SAT1,000 per month
