Overview

The Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs organizes the United Nations Regional Courses in International Law for Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. These courses aim to provide high-quality training on a broad range of international law subjects, fostering greater understanding and cooperation on legal matters within the regions.

Objectives

The Regional Courses offer advanced training by leading scholars and practitioners in various core subjects of international law. They are designed for qualified professionals, especially government officials and international law educators from developing countries and emerging economies, to enhance their knowledge of international law and the legal work of the United Nations.

Background

The United Nations Regional Courses in International Law began in 1967 under the UN Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination, and Wider Appreciation of International Law. Regular budget funding since 2016 has ensured annual courses for Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. More than thirty-five courses have been held globally.

2024 Regional Course for Asia-Pacific

The 2024 Regional Course in International Law for Asia-Pacific will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 18 November to 11 December 2024. It is organized in cooperation with the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

  • Participants: Up to 30, including a limited number of self-funded participants.

Financial Arrangements

Fellowship recipients receive:

  • Economy class travel
  • Accommodation
  • Medical insurance
  • Training materials
  • Modest stipend for living expenses

Self-funded participants must cover their own travel, accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses.

Application Process

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a legal background with professional experience in international law and be fluent in English. They must also certify their ability to attend the entire course.

  • Gender balance (female candidates are encouraged to apply)

Applications are open to candidates from Member States and the observer State to the United Nations in the Asia-Pacific region. The deadline for applications is 28 June 2024.
