Applications Open for the LIT Uganda Female STEM Student Teachers’ Scholarship Program

Are you a young woman passionate about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and interested in becoming a teacher? The Leaders in Teaching (LiT) Uganda Program Female STEM Student Teachers’ Scholarship offers an incredible opportunity for eligible female students to pursue a Bachelor of Science with Education (BScEd) at selected universities across Uganda with full financial support.

The scholarship is designed to increase female participation in STEM teaching, empower future women leaders in education, and address the shortage of qualified female science teachers in Uganda’s secondary schools.

About the Leaders in Teaching (LiT) Uganda Program

The Leaders in Teaching (LiT) Uganda Program is a five-year initiative funded by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented through a consortium of ten education-focused organizations, including the Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF), UNICEF, British Council, VVOB, Edukans International, Brainwave Careers Uganda, STiR Education, PEAS Uganda, Teach for Uganda, and FENU.

Implemented under the leadership of Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports, the program supports the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Africa Works strategy, which aims to enable millions of young people across Africa to access dignified and fulfilling work by 2030.

Through its Recruit, Train, Lead, and Motivate pillars, the program seeks to improve the quality of teaching and learning in secondary schools while expanding opportunities for young women in STEM education.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants will receive comprehensive support throughout their studies, including:

Full Tuition and Functional Fees

The scholarship covers all tuition and university-related functional fees for the duration of the Bachelor of Science with Education program.

Accommodation Support

Recipients will receive accommodation support, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.

Free Laptop

Each scholar will receive a laptop to facilitate digital learning, research, and academic success.

Scholarship Objectives

The scholarship aims to:

  • Increase female participation in STEM teaching careers.
  • Promote equity and inclusion in Uganda’s education sector.
  • Expand the supply of qualified female science teachers.
  • Develop female role models who can inspire the next generation of girls in STEM.

Target Beneficiaries

The program will support:

  • 1,000 female scholars.
  • Young women aged 18–35 years.
  • Refugees and internally displaced persons (7% allocation).
  • Persons with disabilities (5% allocation).
  • Female in-service science, technology, and mathematics teachers seeking to upgrade to a BScEd degree (20% allocation).

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must:

1. Meet the Target Group Requirements

Applicants must be:

  • Female Ugandan citizens residing in Uganda; or
  • Female refugees living in Uganda; or
  • Female youth with disabilities living in Uganda.

2. Have Admission to an Eligible Institution

Applicants must hold an admission offer for a Bachelor of Science with Education (BScEd) from one of the following institutions:

Universities

  • Makerere University
  • Kyambogo University
  • Busitema University
  • Islamic University in Uganda
  • Gulu University
  • Muni University
  • Mountains of the Moon University
  • Mbarara University of Science and Technology
  • Uganda Martyrs University
  • Kabale University

UNITE Campuses

  • Kabale
  • Kaliro
  • Mubende
  • Muni
  • Unyama

3. Demonstrate Commitment to Teaching

Applicants must show a strong commitment to pursuing a teaching career, particularly in secondary schools, and be willing to serve in rural or underserved communities for at least two years after graduation.

4. Demonstrate Financial Need

Applicants must demonstrate genuine financial need and require support to pursue their university education.
