The Aspen Institute, through the Aspen Strategy Group, has launched the prestigious Albright International Leaders Program (AILP), a transformative leadership initiative designed to empower and connect outstanding international professionals working in foreign policy and related fields. Established in honor of former United States Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, the program seeks to cultivate the next generation of global leaders who are committed to diplomacy, international cooperation, and public service.

The Albright International Leaders Program is a unique year-long leadership experience that brings together a select cohort of accomplished international professionals currently based in the United States. Participants will gain access to world-class leadership development opportunities, influential policymakers, renowned experts, and a lifelong network of global leaders.

Applications for the inaugural Class of 2028 are expected to open in June 2027, with successful candidates beginning the program in the fall of 2027 and graduating at the Aspen Security Forum in July 2028.

About the Albright International Leaders Program

The Albright International Leaders Program was created to honor the remarkable legacy of Madeleine K. Albright, the first female U.S. Secretary of State and one of the most influential diplomats in modern history. The program reflects her commitment to diplomacy, international collaboration, democratic values, and leadership development.

As a complement to the Aspen Strategy Group Rising Leaders Program, which focuses primarily on U.S. professionals, the Albright International Leaders Program specifically serves international professionals working in the United States. It aims to foster meaningful dialogue, strengthen international cooperation, and build lasting relationships among leaders from diverse countries and professional backgrounds.

The initiative is supported by the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Strategy Group, organizations known globally for bringing together leaders, policymakers, academics, journalists, and innovators to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

What Participants Will Experience

The Albright International Leaders Program offers a comprehensive leadership development experience that extends far beyond traditional training programs.

1. Leadership Seminar

The program begins with an in-person kick-off event in Washington, D.C. Participants engage in an Aspen leadership seminar designed to encourage deep reflection, meaningful conversations, and authentic connections among cohort members.

This seminar-based learning model emphasizes dialogue rather than lectures, allowing participants to exchange perspectives and learn from one another’s experiences.

2. Engagement with Global Leaders

Throughout the year, participants meet regularly with distinguished leaders from government, diplomacy, academia, business, media, and international organizations.

These engagements provide invaluable insights into global affairs, policymaking, international security, and emerging geopolitical challenges.

3. Exclusive Networking Opportunities

Participants become part of a powerful international network that includes:

  • Senior government officials
  • Members of Congress
  • Diplomats
  • Journalists
  • Academic experts
  • Business leaders
  • Aspen Strategy Group members
  • Alumni of Aspen leadership programs

These connections can create long-term opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and professional advancement.

4. Aspen Security Forum Participation

One of the highlights of the program is participation in the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado.

The Aspen Security Forum is one of the most respected gatherings in the world for discussions on national security, foreign policy, diplomacy, defense, and international relations. Participants gain direct exposure to leading voices shaping global policy.

5. Alumni and Cross-Program Events

The program also provides opportunities to engage with alumni from previous cohorts and selected events involving participants from the Aspen Strategy Group’s Rising Leaders Program.

These interactions help strengthen professional networks across sectors and national boundaries.
