AIR–AERC 2026 Impact Evaluation Faculty Retooling Workshop: Strengthening Africa’s Research Capacity in Policy Evaluation
The AIR–AERC 2026 Impact Evaluation Faculty Retooling Workshop is a high-level training opportunity designed to enhance the skills of African researchers and academic faculty in evaluating social and economic policies. Organized by the African Economic Research Consortium in collaboration with the American Institutes for Research, this program is part of a broader effort to strengthen Africa’s capacity for evidence-based policymaking.
Established in 1988, AERC has played a pivotal role in advancing economic research and graduate training across Africa. Through strategic partnerships, policy engagement, and knowledge co-production, the organization continues to empower African scholars to address pressing economic challenges with rigor and independence.
Why This Workshop Matters
Across Africa, governments and development organizations invest heavily in social and economic programs. However, understanding whether these programs actually deliver measurable impact remains a critical challenge. This workshop directly addresses that gap by equipping participants with advanced tools and methodologies to evaluate program effectiveness.
Participants will gain the ability to answer key policy questions such as:
- Does a specific program achieve its intended outcomes?
- How does impact vary across different population groups?
- Which interventions are most cost-effective?
- What mechanisms drive program success or failure?
By strengthening these analytical capabilities, the workshop contributes to more effective policymaking and improved development outcomes across the continent.
Workshop Objectives
The training is structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Key objectives include:
- Developing a solid understanding of program and policy impact evaluation concepts
- Learning how to formulate and refine evaluation questions
- Exploring different evaluation designs and methodologies
- Building criteria for selecting appropriate estimation strategies
- Interpreting evaluation results accurately and linking them to policy implications
- Gaining hands-on experience with quantitative tools and real-world data
