This unique leadership role is designed for individuals who are passionate about advocacy, equity, and community impact, and who want to contribute their voice to decision-making processes that influence real change.

DC Action is currently seeking applications from motivated young adults ready to step into leadership roles and support its mission of ensuring that all children and youth in the District of Columbia grow up safe, resilient, and empowered.

About the Program

DC Action is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving outcomes for children and youth through research, advocacy, and collaboration. Formed through the merger of DC Action for Children and the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates, the organization works to unify efforts across sectors and ensure a more coordinated approach to supporting young people.

As a Young Adult Board Member, selected candidates will serve on the organization’s Board of Directors and contribute to governance, oversight, and strategic decision-making. Board members play an important role in guiding the organization’s direction, ensuring accountability, and strengthening its advocacy efforts.

This position is designed not only to support the organization but also to provide young leaders with hands-on experience in nonprofit governance and policy engagement.

Why This Opportunity Matters

Young people are often the most affected by policies related to education, housing, health, and economic opportunity, yet they are frequently underrepresented in decision-making spaces. This opportunity addresses that gap by placing young leaders directly at the table where key decisions are made.

By joining the DC Action Board, young adults can bring their lived experiences and perspectives into discussions that shape programs and policies. This contributes to more inclusive, equitable, and effective solutions for communities.

In addition, the organization’s commitment to racial equity and its focus on addressing systemic barriers ensures that board members are engaging in work that has long-term impact on social justice and community wellbeing.

What Participants Will Gain

Serving as a Young Adult Board Member offers both personal and professional development opportunities. Participants will gain valuable leadership experience by contributing to governance and strategic planning processes.

They will also build skills in advocacy, event planning, and fundraising—key competencies for careers in nonprofit leadership, public policy, and community development. Board members will have the opportunity to expand their professional networks, collaborate with experienced leaders, and gain insight into how organizations operate at a strategic level.

In addition, selected participants will receive a modest quarterly stipend, providing financial support while they contribute their time and expertise.

Who Can Apply

This opportunity is open to young adults aged 18 to 30 who are passionate about improving outcomes for children and youth in Washington, DC.

Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in advocacy, leadership, and community engagement. While prior board experience is not required, candidates should be committed to contributing actively to the organization’s mission and participating in governance activities.

DC Action encourages applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, particularly those from communities that are directly impacted by systemic inequities.
