Program Overview

Launched in 2025, the ASPPH/CDC Tribal Health Department Fellowship Program is a collaboration between the ASPPH Center for Public Health Workforce Development and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The program is designed to strengthen Tribal Health Departments by placing skilled public health graduates into host sites where they can contribute to priority-driven projects while gaining hands-on experience.

Fellows will:

• Work on real public health challenges defined by Tribal Health Departments
• Receive mentorship from experienced Tribal public health professionals
• Participate in structured professional development sessions
• Build practical, career-ready skills in Tribal public health

By the end of the fellowship, participants will have developed strong competencies and made measurable contributions to Tribal health systems.

Fellowship Structure

• Work Mode: Primarily in-person (some hybrid/remote options available depending on placement)
• Relocation Costs: Not covered

Fellowship Placement Locations

Participants can apply to up to three host sites. Available locations include:

• Norman, Oklahoma
• Pueblo of Jemez, New Mexico
• Pembroke, North Carolina
• Box Elder, Montana
• Siletz, Oregon
• Winnebago, Nebraska

Each site offers a unique project aligned with its public health priorities.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

• Hold a graduate-level degree in public health from a CEPH-accredited ASPPH member institution
• Have completed their degree between May 2021 and August 2026
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card holder)
