The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) has officially opened applications for its 2026 Internship Program, offering young African scholars and professionals a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in research, policy engagement, and capacity development.

With a strong reputation as a leading research-to-policy institution in Africa, APHRC plays a vital role in generating evidence, strengthening research capacity, and shaping policies that improve health and development outcomes across sub-Saharan Africa.

About the APHRC Internship Program

The internship program is implemented under APHRC’s Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Program, which focuses on equipping African researchers with the skills and experience needed to contribute meaningfully to population and health research on the continent.

Designed as a demand-driven initiative, the internship aims to nurture the next generation of African research leaders, scholars, and professionals while promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM).

For the 2026 cycle, selected interns will engage in projects for a period of 3–6 months starting May 2026, with a hybrid working arrangement that may require physical presence when necessary.

Available Internship Projects and Departments

APHRC is offering a wide range of internship placements across multiple thematic areas and operational units. These include:

  • Gender and Education Program
  • ICT Unit (General Administration & Software Development)
  • Data Science (AI/ML, Full Stack Development, QA Testing)
  • Cardiometabolic and Mental Health Research (M-Care Project)
  • Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programs
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
  • Climate and Health Financing (Fin4ClimHealth Project)
  • Clean Cooking and Agroforestry (C2A)
  • Social Exclusion and Policy Research (CARTA, CPSE, CACEPS)
  • International Programs (Administration, Liaison, Partnerships, Communications)
  • Facilities, Finance, and People & Culture Units
  • Evaluation and Impact Initiatives
  • WFP Home-Grown School Feeding Project

In total, 35 diverse projects and departments are available, allowing applicants to align their interests with specialized research and operational areas.

Key Responsibilities

Successful applicants will be expected to:

  • Work with a supervisor to develop internship objectives and a structured work plan
  • Provide regular updates and contribute to project deliverables
  • Participate in policy engagement and strategic planning activities
  • Deliver at least one Brown Bag Presentation (BBP)
  • Submit a final written report before completion
  • Provide feedback on the internship experience
  • Participate in follow-up evaluation surveys

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the APHRC internship, applicants must:

  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree within the last six months or be pursuing/completing a master’s degree
  • Be trained in fields such as:
    • Population studies / demography
    • Statistics
    • Epidemiology
    • Economics
    • Social sciences or related disciplines
  • Possess strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills (especially for research roles)
  • Be a national of a sub-Saharan African country

The application process involves two key steps:

Step 1: Online Survey

Applicants must complete a short online survey 

Step 2: Email Submission

Submit a single PDF document containing:

  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
  • Academic certificates (degree and any relevant certifications)
  • 1–2 letters of recommendation (maximum 1 page each, including one from an academic supervisor)
