The Ernest Rutherford Fellowship (ERF) supports talented early-career researchers to establish independent research programmes within the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) core science remit. The fellowship aims to nurture future leaders in astronomy, particle physics, nuclear physics, accelerator science, and related technologies.

Fellows will have the opportunity to carry out ambitious, high-quality research at a UK research organisation with an ERF quota, developing their leadership skills and building international collaborations.

What the Fellowship Offers

  • Fellowship of up to five years
  • Funding provided at 80% of the full economic cost of the project (host research organisation covers the remaining 20%)
  • Significant independence to design and lead your research agenda
  • Opportunity to build a network within STFC’s community and beyond

Eligibility Criteria

You must:

  • Be an early career researcher with a PhD or equivalent research experience
  • Demonstrate clear potential for research leadership
  • Be hosted by an eligible UK research organisation with an STFC ERF quota
  • Not hold a tenured academic post or academic position at lecturer level or above

Projects must align with STFC’s core science programme, including:

  • Astronomy and astrophysics
  • Particle physics
  • Nuclear physics
  • Accelerator science
  • Technologies supporting these disciplines

Timeline

  • 4 June 2025: Applications open
  • 1 October 2025, 4:00pm UK time: Applications close
  • October 2025 – January 2026: Expert peer review
  • January / February 2026: Applicant response stage
  • March 2026: Decisions on interview invitations
  • April / May 2026: Interviews
  • May / June 2026: Fellowship awards announced

  2. Develop a high-quality independent research proposal.
  3. Ensure your host institution agrees to support the required 20% of the project costs.
  4. Complete and submit your application through the UKRI Funding Service by the deadline.
  5. Closing date: 1 October 2025, 4:00pm UK time
