CUNY x MTA Internship Program 2025: Paid Opportunities for Students

The City University of New York (CUNY), in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), is now accepting applications for the 2025 Fall CUNY x MTA Internship Program. This opportunity allows CUNY students to gain meaningful, paid work experience across a range of professional fields within the United States’ largest public transit system.

Program Overview

Launched to provide students with direct exposure to real-world challenges in public service and infrastructure, the CUNY x MTA Internship Program offers over 100 internship placements. These placements span diverse fields including technology, engineering, architecture, urban planning, business, and law. The aim is to support skill development, career exploration, and professional growth for students pursuing various academic paths.

Interns are placed across MTA offices and departments, where they work alongside seasoned professionals contributing to impactful projects. Selected students will work part-time during the academic year and will receive a competitive hourly wage of $22.

Key Internship Details

  • Internship Duration: September 2025 – June 2026

  • Pay Rate: $22 per hour

  • Weekly Hours: 19 to 34 hours

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday

  • Breaks: Two mandatory finals breaks

  • Location: Various MTA offices across New York City

Interns may be involved in hands-on design projects, data analysis, urban mobility research, legal research, business operations, or public service coordination—depending on their academic background and the role they are selected for.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a matriculated student at any CUNY institution

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher

  • Meet the academic or major-specific requirements detailed in each internship listing

  • Be available to work between September 2025 and June 2026

  • Be applying for the CUNY x MTA Internship Program for the first time

Students from all class standings (undergraduate and graduate) are welcome to apply, provided they meet the GPA and enrollment requirements.

How to Apply

All applications must be submitted via the Handshake platform:

  1. Create an Account or Log In:
    Access Handshake through your CUNY institution or directly at the official site.

  2. Prepare Your Materials:
    Upload an updated resume.

  3. Search and Apply:
    Go to the “Jobs” tab, then “Jobs and Internships,” and search for “MTA” or locate the positions using the listed Job IDs.

Students are encouraged to review the job descriptions carefully and apply for roles that align with their field of study and career interests. The application deadline is June 8, 2025.

Selection Process

Interviews will be conducted by on-site MTA managers throughout June and July. Students selected for interviews will receive invitations during this period. Final decisions and offer letters are expected to be distributed by July 2025, directly from CUNY.

Note that the internship selection process is competitive. Students are encouraged to submit high-quality applications and tailor their resumes to highlight relevant coursework, skills, or prior experience.
