The Global Schools Advocates Program is a flagship initiative designed to equip primary and secondary school teachers and leaders with the skills, resources, and global network to promote education for sustainable development (ESD). Applications are now open for the 2025 cohort, with a deadline of June 9, 2025.

About the Program

Education for Sustainable Development provides students with the knowledge, values, and critical thinking skills needed to address global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, environmental degradation, and sustainable economic development. The Global Schools Advocates Program supports educators to embed these principles across school curricula, classroom activities, and school-wide operations.

The program was developed based on input from over 220 sustainable development experts and more than 40 experienced educators. It is a cohort-style learning and action experience that emphasizes localized implementation, peer collaboration, and practical impact.

What the Program Offers

Training Overview

The online training is self-paced, with optional live sessions, and takes approximately 10 to 15 hours to complete. Participants are introduced to the SDGs and ESD principles and receive practical strategies for integrating sustainability into their classroom practice. After successful completion, participants are officially recognized as Global Schools Advocates and receive access to exclusive resources.

Program Components

  1. ESD Training and Certification: Advocates complete foundational training on the SDGs and sustainable development teaching strategies. Upon completion, they receive formal recognition and access to a comprehensive toolkit.

  2. Introduction of ESD in the School Community: Advocates introduce ESD principles to their students, fellow teachers, and school leadership. They are expected to conduct at least one workshop for staff to raise awareness and build momentum.

  3. Implementation of ESD Activities: Using lesson plans and other resources, Advocates develop classroom or school-wide activities tailored to their local context. Flexibility is encouraged so educators can design initiatives that align with their school’s needs.

  4. Professional Development and Global Engagement: Participants engage with a global community of educators through monthly workshops, mentoring sessions, and collaborative learning opportunities. They are encouraged to share experiences, challenges, and success stories.

  5. Visibility and Leadership Opportunities: Selected Advocates may be invited to present their work at international forums such as the International Conference on Sustainable Development, the Vatican Youth Symposium, and the ECOSOC Youth Forum.
