The United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme is now accepting applications for its 2025 cohort. Organized by the Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs, this prestigious programme provides advanced training in international law by leading scholars and practitioners. The programme takes place at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands.
About the Programme
The International Law Fellowship Programme is designed to enhance participants’ knowledge of international law and the legal work of the United Nations. The programme is open to government officials and international law scholars from developing countries and emerging economies. The 2025 edition will accommodate up to 20 participants, who will attend a fully funded summer course from June 30 to August 1, 2025. The course will be conducted in French.
Programme Structure
Participants will engage in seminars, lectures, and discussions led by international law experts. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Introduction to International Law
- Treaty Law
- International Peace and Security
- International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
- Law of the Sea and Environmental Law
- International Trade and Investment Law
- Diplomatic and Consular Law
- International Criminal Law
Additionally, participants will attend the Public International Law session at The Hague Academy of International Law.
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows will receive full financial support, which includes:
- Economy-class travel
- Accommodation
- Medical insurance
- Training materials
- A stipend for living expenses
- Registration fee for The Hague Academy
Self-funded participants may also apply and will have access to the training materials but must cover their own expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the programme, applicants must:
- Have a legal background with professional experience in international law
- Be fluent in French (spoken and written)
- Be available to attend the entire programme
Application Process
Applicants must submit the following:
- A completed application form in French (typed, detailed, and signed)
- A Letter of Transmission from a senior official at their institution
- Proof of French proficiency (such as a diploma, language certificate, or work experience)
- The application must be submitted via email to ilfp@un.org in both:
- A scanned signed version (PDF or JPG)
- A Word document version
Selection Criteria
Candidates will be selected based on the following factors:
- Professional qualifications and the relevance of the training
- Geographical representation and gender balance
- Priority given to applicants from underrepresented UN Member States
Application Deadline
The deadline for applications is February 26, 2025. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
