Background
This internship is with the UNFCCC secretariat, located in Bonn, Germany, within the Adaptation Division’s Vulnerability Sub-Division. The sub-division focuses on:
- Catalyzing knowledge-sharing on climate change impacts.
- Enhancing understanding of needs and actions in various sectors and groups.
- Managing a repository of adaptation data and information.
The Vulnerability Sub-Division comprises two units:
- NWP Unit: Supports the Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) on climate change impacts, including the Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI).
- LCIPP Unit: Supports the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) and its Facilitative Working Group (FWG).
The intern will report to the Team Lead of the NWP Unit and support the Nairobi Work Programme’s initiatives.
Internship Objectives and Responsibilities
The intern will contribute to the Vulnerability Sub-Division’s workstreams, particularly the Nairobi Work Programme. Key tasks include:
- Research and Analysis:
- Compile and analyze background documents for mandated reports and knowledge products.
- Conduct quantitative data analyses and literature reviews.
- Event and Meeting Support:
- Assist in organizing and implementing LAKI priority-setting workshops.
- Participate in outreach activities and thematic events.
- Support the design and delivery of regional and thematic meetings.
- Content Management:
- Manage content on the NWP Adaptation Knowledge Portal and other UNFCCC pages.
- Create videos, infographics, and other multimedia content to expand the subdivision’s reach.
- Communication and Outreach:
- Develop social media posts, news articles, and other outreach materials.
- Conduct surveys to assess knowledge needs and measure the impact of NWP resources.
- Assist with event communication, including pre-event materials, note-taking, and post-event summaries.
- Additional Tasks:
- Provide support as required by the Vulnerability Sub-Division Manager and Adaptation Division Director.
Timeframe
The internship will take place remotely for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months, between January 2025 and April 2026. The exact timeframe will depend on the intern’s availability and division needs.
Minimum Requirements
- Enrollment in a recognized university program (bachelor’s or graduate level) and in the final academic year at the time of application.
- Preferred fields of study: Climate change, ecology, environmental studies, international relations, sustainable development, or related disciplines.
- Skills in communication, social media, infographics, and multimedia are an asset.
- Fluency in English (oral and written) with demonstrated communication skills.
- Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
Technical Requirements for Remote Work
- A laptop or desktop PC with updated Windows 10/MacOS.
- Reliable high-speed internet connection.
- Antivirus software with regular updates.
- Updated web browsers.
- Mobile phone for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
An Office 365 license will be provided for accessing UNFCCC tools such as SharePoint, OneDrive, and Office applications.
Internship Conditions
- The internship is unpaid. Interns must cover their expenses before, during, and after the assignment.
- Interns are not considered UNFCCC staff members.
- Work hours: 20–40 hours per week, based on the intern’s availability.
