Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race are pleased to announce the acceptance of applications for the 2025 International Program on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Policy. This program is offered in partnership with the University of Auckland (New Zealand) and the University of British Columbia (Canada).

This intensive program is designed for professionals, researchers, practitioners, and advanced students interested in Indigenous Peoples’ rights and policy. With a strong emphasis on human rights, the program provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary issues in Indigenous affairs worldwide.
Course Overview
The program combines lectures, workshops, and site visits to enhance participants’ understanding of Indigenous Peoples’ issues. Highlights include:
- Interdisciplinary Approach: Engaging discussions on recent academic research and policy debates.
- Expert Faculty: Lectures from Columbia University faculty, Indigenous leaders, and UN representatives.
- Field Visits: Opportunities to visit the United Nations and a Native American Nation, with discussions involving UN officials and Native American leaders.
Methodology
The course features 4-6 hours of daily lectures and workshops, totaling approximately 25 sessions, along with 6-8 participant panels. Each participant will present on selected texts, country-specific cases, jurisprudence, or thematic interests, fostering a collaborative learning environment. A recommended bibliography will be provided for pre-course study.
Academic Configuration
Participants will receive instruction from:
- Faculty from Columbia University, the University of Auckland, and the University of British Columbia
- Indigenous experts and leaders
- UN representatives
A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
Cost
The total cost for the two-week program is US$3,000, covering:
- Tuition
- Transportation to a Native American Nation and UN Headquarters
- Breakfast and lunch
- Accommodation during field visits
Columbia University also offers student housing on campus for approximately US$1,200. Scholarships may be available based on need.
