This is a unique opportunity for MBA graduates to work directly with senior leaders at the U.S. Department of State, applying their expertise in management and business strategy to key operational challenges.

About the Fellowship

Launched in 2023, the MBA Special Advisor Fellowship offers MBA graduates the chance to work closely with senior executives within the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Management Strategy and Solutions (M/SS). Fellows will advise on critical management functions such as data analytics, strategic planning, financial management, and operations. This one-year program is designed to allow fellows to utilize cutting-edge business strategies to help solve complex challenges across the Department of State.

As part of the Fellowship, participants will undergo a comprehensive orientation before beginning a year-long engagement where they will focus on high-impact projects that align with the Department’s strategic priorities.

Available Fellowship Projects for 2025

The 2025 cohort will include four available positions, with the following project opportunities:

  1. Data and Analytics Advisor
    Work with the Executive Office (EX) of the Bureaus of Near Eastern Affairs and South and Central Asian Affairs. Lead data analysis to support EX policy, budget, and operational goals, and provide recommendations to senior leadership on resource allocation and process improvements.
    Location: Washington, D.C.
  2. Operations Management Advisor
    Support the Bureau of Administration (A) by analyzing enterprise service delivery and identifying opportunities for optimization. Develop recommendations to enhance efficiency across various operations and monitor their implementation.
    Location: Washington, D.C.
  3. Data and Analytics Advisor – Consular Affairs
    Analyze passport and visa processing data for the Bureau of Consular Affairs to identify trends and their economic impact on U.S. communities. Work with other federal departments to deepen the analysis and enhance storytelling through data-driven insights.
    Location: Washington, D.C.
  4. Financial Management Advisor
    Help the Bureau of Administration evaluate resource allocation needs using cost modeling and scenario analysis. You will design and implement strategies for ongoing cost efficiency improvements and help integrate organizational change management strategies.
    Location: Washington, D.C.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Hold an MBA degree or be in the second year of an MBA program with degree conferral before July 2025.
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.
  • Possess strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.

  • Transcripts (indicating an MBA degree or expected graduation prior to July 2025)
  • Statement of Interest (one-page, outlining your interest in the Fellowship and public sector, and identifying the project(s) of interest)

FAQs

  • Duration: The Fellowship runs for 12 months, with the possibility of an extension based on funding.
  • Location: All roles are based in Washington, D.C. Relocation assistance is not provided.
  • Salary and Benefits: Fellows will be appointed at the GS-9 to GS-13 level, depending on experience, with salaries starting at $64,957 (GS-9). Health benefits are available, but housing is the responsibility of the Fellow.
