UCL Launches Humanitarian Scholarships for Students Affected by Armed Conflict

University College London (UCL) has announced a new initiative to support students whose education has been disrupted by armed conflict or persecution. The UCL Humanitarian Scholarships will see the university invest nearly £900,000 over three years to provide vital financial assistance.

The scholarships will cover essential expenses, including tuition fees, living costs, and additional expenses like visa applications and health charges. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate serious risk due to armed conflict or displacement within the last three years and come from lower-income backgrounds, showing financial need.

Recognizing the complex challenges these students may face, UCL will offer tailored support services to help them thrive academically and personally. UCL President Dr. Michael Spence highlighted the transformative impact of education, stating, “Access to education can be profoundly life-changing.”

The application process for the scholarships will open in February 2025, with the first cohort expected to begin their studies in September 2025. This initiative will support four students each year for three years and is part of UCL’s broader commitment to providing financial assistance to international students, having awarded over £9.6 million in scholarships in the 2023/24 academic year. Further details about the scholarship scheme will be published online as they become available.
