The Future of Teaching: A Global Initiative to Shape the Next Decade of Education

As the world undergoes profound changes in climate, society, politics, and the economy, education systems are evolving to meet new challenges. One of the most significant aspects of this transformation is the changing nature of teaching and the role of teachers. To address these critical shifts, the Salzburg Global Seminar is launching a program titled “The Future of Teaching,” bringing together key stakeholders from around the world to discuss and shape the future of education over the next decade.

Program Overview: This program will explore three key areas that are driving change in education:

  • Teacher Recruitment and Retention: With many regions facing severe teacher shortages, the program will examine how expectations of teachers are evolving and where innovations are being implemented to address these challenges.
  • Impact of Artificial Intelligence: AI presents both opportunities and threats to the teaching profession. This program will explore how AI is being used to enhance teaching and where these innovations can be replicated or adapted.
  • Transforming Education Initiatives: The United Nations’ global initiative on Transforming Education has led to significant policy shifts. This program will explore the involvement of the teaching profession in this global movement and how teachers can connect directly with policymakers.

Participant Profile: The program will bring together approximately 50 participants, including teachers, teaching unions, policymakers, researchers, and civil society organizations. Participation is by invitation or application, with the application window open from July 24 to September 4, 2024.

Program Format:

  • Online Co-Creation Meetings: October 8, October 21, and November 18, 2024.
  • In-Person Program: December 8-13, 2024, at Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria.
  • Ongoing Online Engagement: Through 2025, with the cadence decided by participants.

Program Goals: Participants will engage in a highly participatory process, co-creating the structure of the program and its outcomes. The program aims to produce tangible outputs, including a Salzburg Statement or Manifesto on the future of teaching, and an essay collection providing diverse perspectives on the central themes.
