AGHAAZ FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM APPLICATION 2024

Program Overview

The “Aghaaz” fellowship program, which means “rebirth” in Dari, aims to empower and support Afghan women evacuees. This initiative involves strategic partnerships with various organizations specializing in women’s leadership, peace and security, human rights, education, entrepreneurship, good governance, and the rule of law. The program collaborates with universities, civil society organizations, and think tanks in Washington D.C., leveraging their expertise and resources to offer meaningful fellowship opportunities for selected participants.

Fellowship Criteria

  1. Eligibility Requirements:
    • Applicants must be Afghan women evacuated to the U.S., prioritizing those evacuated by Vital Voices Global Partnership.
    • Demonstrated commitment to advancing women’s rights and empowerment, including leadership development and the promotion of human rights and the rule of law.
    • Interest in women’s empowerment, capacity building, diaspora organizing, policy and advocacy, and resettlement support.
    • Must reside in the U.S. and be willing to work collaboratively with other organizations and participants.
    • Financial stability will be considered, but financial need is not disqualifying.
    • Proficient in English.
    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Demonstrated commitment to the Vital Voices core principles of leadership.
  2. Application Process:
    • Submit a complete application, including a personal statement, resume/CV, and at least two letters of recommendation.
    • The personal statement should align with the project’s goals and demonstrate passion for women’s rights and leadership.
    • Letters of recommendation must reflect the applicant’s qualifications and commitment.
  3. Fellowship Selection:
    • A selection panel from VV’s Afghanistan portfolio and relevant Afghan experts will review applications.
    • Shortlisted candidates may undergo interviews to assess their commitment and effectiveness.
  4. Fellowship Components:
    • Fellows will have opportunities at NGOs, think tanks, and universities in Washington D.C. relevant to their objectives.
    • Ongoing mentorship and support will be provided, including regular check-ins and networking opportunities.
    • Fellows are encouraged to share their experiences and insights through various platforms.

  • Counterpart International: Focuses on governance, civil society, and community resilience, offering global capacity building and development programs.
  • Afghan American Foundation: Provides educational and vocational programs, supports community development, and facilitates cultural exchanges.
  • Women for Afghan Women (WAW): Advocates for women’s rights in Afghanistan, operates shelters, and provides education, vocational training, and healthcare services.
  • Afghan American Women’s Association: Promotes cultural preservation and community engagement, provides social services and advocacy support, and empowers women’s leadership.
  • Mina’s List: Supports women’s political participation and leadership globally, with training for women from conflict-affected regions.
