The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, Spain, is offering 10 fellowship opportunities for undergraduate and MSc students for the 2026/2027 academic year. Available Research Projects

1. Proteomics – Development of LC-MS/MS Workflows

This Master’s-level project focuses on developing robust workflows for proteoform characterization in liquid biopsies. Students will gain experience in sample preparation, protein digestion, peptide clean-up, LC-MS/MS, experimental design, quality control and data analysis.

It is particularly suitable for students in biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences or related fields.

2. Regulatory Genomics and Diabetes – CRISPRi Screening

This undergraduate project investigates CRISPR interference screening in human pancreatic beta cells, with applications to understanding and improving potential treatments for Type 1 diabetes.

Students will receive training in molecular cloning, lentiviral production, cell culture and single-cell sequencing workflows.

3. Single-Cell Genomics and Evolution

This computational project compares methods for integrating genome-wide expression data across developmental trajectories.

Applicants should have a background in life sciences, with an interest in genomics, bioinformatics or computational biology. Basic Bash/Linux, R and Python skills are expected.

4. Systems and Synthetic Biology – CpG Organisation and Longevity

This four-month computational project examines the relationship between CpG spatial organisation and mammalian longevity using comparative genomics and statistical modelling.

It is suitable for BSc or MSc students interested in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, evolution or ageing research.

5. Reprogramming and Regeneration – Chromatin Folding

Students will investigate how depletion of TOP2A or TOP2B affects chromatin organisation in human cells using Optical Reconstruction of Chromatin Architecture (ORCA).

The project is suitable for motivated undergraduate students interested in molecular biology, cell biology, microscopy or quantitative biology. Previous ORCA or advanced programming experience is not required.

6. Cell Fate Decoding and Engineering

This project investigates neuronal diversity and cell fate engineering using transcription factors, molecular cloning, lentiviral vectors and mammalian cell culture.

Students from different backgrounds can apply, as training will be provided. Motivation, curiosity and willingness to learn are particularly important.

7. Probabilistic Machine Learning and Genomics

This Master’s-level computational project combines protein language models, protein folding, human genetics and machine learning to investigate the mechanisms behind missense genetic variants.

Applicants should have a background in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, physics, mathematics or a related quantitative discipline. Python programming experience is expected.

8. Systems and Synthetic Biology – Genotype-Phenotype Maps

This project uses computational approaches to investigate how environmental changes influence genotype-phenotype relationships and evolutionary simulations.

It is particularly suited to students with backgrounds in physics, computer science, biology or bioinformatics who are interested in interdisciplinary research.

9. Computational Biology and Health Genomics

Students will analyse structural variants identified through long-read sequencing and investigate their potential effects on gene regulation.

Applicants should have skills in Python and Bash/command line, alongside knowledge of molecular biology, statistics and genomics.

10. Evolutionary Processes Modeling and Cancer

This computational project explores how genetic and evolutionary factors influence the immunogenic potential of cancer-associated mutations.

Students interested in computational biology, evolution or cancer genomics are encouraged to apply. Experience with Python or similar programming languages and large datasets is preferred.
