Eligibility Requirements
General Eligibility
To apply, you must:
- Hold or expect to hold a doctorate or health professional degree before the award start date.
- Not hold or be on leave from a tenure‑track or tenured faculty position.
- Have completed all requirements of your doctoral or health professional degree no more than three years before September 1 of the application year.
Important clarification: The completion date refers to the date when all degree requirements were met, including thesis defense and submission of the corrected thesis—not the convocation date.
Eligibility Extensions (Up to 3 Years)
Extensions may be granted for:
- Parental, medical, or family‑related interruptions
- Mandatory military service
- War, civil conflict, or natural disasters
- Socio‑economic barriers limiting research opportunities
- Full‑time relevant employment in industry or government
- Primary caregiver responsibilities after birth or adoption
- Non‑research clinical training (e.g., residency)
Restrictions
- Only one application per academic year (CGS‑M, CGS‑D, or CPRA).
- Maximum three CPRA applications in a lifetime.
- You cannot have previously received a tri‑agency postdoctoral award (e.g., Banting).
- You cannot hold a CPRA concurrently with another tri‑agency research training award.
- Proposed research must be predominantly research‑oriented and distinct from your doctoral thesis.
