The Institute of International Relations Prague (IIR), in cooperation with the Think Visegrad platform, is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Think Visegrad Fellowship 2026. This prestigious fellowship offers researchers, analysts, and policy experts from non-Visegrad countries a unique opportunity to engage with leading Central European think tanks, conduct high-impact policy research, and contribute to strategic regional dialogue.
Think Visegrad is not merely a fellowship program — it is a structured think tank platform designed to foster meaningful dialogue on issues of strategic regional importance. Established in 2012 by eight think tanks from the Visegrad Group countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia), the platform has consistently provided actionable recommendations to V4 governments, the annual presidencies of the Group, and the International Visegrad Fund. The platform also functions as a bridge between V4 and non-V4 experts, offering visiting fellowships to researchers from outside the region.
For 2026, eight visiting fellowships will be awarded across the core network of think tanks that constitute the Think Visegrad platform. Each selected fellow will be hosted by one of these institutions, gaining direct access to the host institute’s research environment, expert networks, and ongoing activities.
Fellowship Duration and Format
The duration of each fellowship is flexible, ranging from 6 to 8 weeks. However, all fellows are required to spend a minimum of 4 weeks in-person at the hosting institution. The exact schedule and balance between in-person and remote work is determined through agreement with the host institute. This hybrid structure allows fellows to immerse themselves in the local policy environment while maintaining flexibility for their ongoing professional commitments.
Financial Support and Coverage
Selected fellows receive comprehensive financial support to ensure a productive and stress-free research stay. The breakdown of funding is as follows:
- Lump sum of €3,400– This amount is provided to cover all necessary costs and expenditures related to the fellow’s stay at the hosting institute, including:
- Lodging / accommodation
- Local transportation
- Daily living expenses
- Health and social insurance (fellow’s responsibility)
- Any applicable taxes and related fees
- Additional travel reimbursement of up to €500– Think Visegrad covers the cost of international travel from the fellow’s home country to the hosting institute. This reimbursement is provided separately and can be claimed up to the maximum amount of €500.
Fellows should note that they are personally responsible for paying all taxes, fees, and insurance premiums (including health and social insurance) from the €3,400 lump sum. It is strongly recommended that applicants budget accordingly and consult local regulations regarding short-term research stays.
Research Topics and Focus Areas
Fellowships are available across a broad spectrum of research areas within:
- Political science
- International relations
- Economics
However, selected topics must complement the existing research focus of the hosting institute. Therefore, applicants are highly recommended to visit the website of their preferred host institute before submitting an application. Understanding the institute’s ongoing projects, publications, and strategic priorities will significantly strengthen the relevance and competitiveness of your proposal.
Each fellow is expected to achieve two primary deliverables during their fellowship period:
- A policy paper– A substantive, evidence-based document addressing a pre-agreed topic relevant to the Visegrad region and the host institute’s expertise.
- One public presentation– A seminar, lecture, or workshop delivered at the hosting institute, allowing the fellow to share their findings with local researchers, policymakers, and the broader expert community.
Eligibility Criteria
Before applying, please ensure you meet the following requirements:
- You must be an expert fellow from a non-Visegrad country(i.e., not a citizen or permanent resident of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, or Slovakia).
- Priority is given to applicants with a proven track record of significant contribution in their field of research.
- High-quality project proposals from junior and mid-career researchersare also duly considered.
- Previous Think Visegrad Fellowsare not eligible to apply again. Applications from past fellows will be automatically dismissed without review.
There is no strict age limit or minimum degree requirement, although a strong academic or professional background in political science, international relations, economics, or a closely related discipline is expected.
Host Institutions (Core Network Think Tanks)
The eight visiting fellowships are distributed across the core network think tanks that coordinate the Think Visegrad platform. While the specific list of host institutions for 2026 should be confirmed on the official website, the core network traditionally includes leading V4 research centers with coordinating abilities. The platform remains open to cooperation with other think tanks from all V4 countries, but the 2026 fellowships will be hosted exclusively by members of this core network.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to research each host institute’s thematic focus, ongoing projects, and available mentorship before indicating preferences in their application.
Application Requirements
All application dossiers must be submitted as three separate PDF files. Incomplete applications or files submitted in other formats may not be considered.
The required documents are:
- Application form– The official Think Visegrad Fellowship application form (available for download from the program’s website).
- Structured CV– A detailed curriculum vitae that includes a complete list of publications, previous research positions, academic degrees, and relevant professional experience. Use clear headings and chronological organization.
- Motivation letter– Maximum 300 words. This letter should explain:
- Why you are interested in the Think Visegrad Fellowship
- How your research aligns with the host institute’s focus
- What policy paper topic you propose to develop during the fellowship
- What you hope to gain from and contribute to the Visegrad research community

Application Deadline
The deadline for submission is May 15, 2026. Applications received after this date will not be considered. Late or incomplete submissions will be automatically disqualified.
Selection Timeline and Process
While the official selection timeline is not published in the call, applicants should expect the following general process:
- Initial eligibility screening
- Review of project proposals and CVs by the core network think tanks
- Potential interviews (virtual or in-person) with shortlisted candidates
- Final selection and matching with host institutes
- Notification of results (likely by mid-to-late 2026, given the Summer/Autumn/Winter fellowship periods)

- Autumn 2026

Selected fellows will work with their host institute to determine exact start and end dates within the agreed seasonal window.
