Spread the love

The African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (AYNF) 2026 is a premier pan-African capacity-building initiative designed to equip young climate leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to actively participate in global climate governance. As one of the continent’s leading youth-focused climate diplomacy programs, AYNF is dedicated to strengthening African representation in international climate negotiations, particularly within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Now in its fifth cohort, the fellowship continues to build a strong and inclusive pipeline of African youth leaders capable of shaping climate policies at national, regional, and global levels. The program is organized by the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ghana and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN).

About the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (AYNF)

The AYNF Fellowship was established to address the urgent need for increased African youth participation in climate decision-making processes. Climate negotiations are complex and require both technical expertise and strategic negotiation skills. This fellowship bridges that gap by preparing young Africans to effectively engage in these processes.

Participants gain exposure to:

  • Climate science fundamentals
  • Global climate governance systems
  • Negotiation frameworks and diplomacy
  • Policy analysis and development
  • Leadership and advocacy skills

The program also creates pathways for fellows to engage in key international climate events, including Conference of the Parties (COP) engagements.

Program Structure and Learning Model

The AYNF Fellowship 2026 is delivered in three comprehensive phases, combining online learning, in-person engagement, and long-term mentorship.

Phase 1: Foundational Online Learning

All applicants must begin their journey with a mandatory learning phase through the Ghana Climate Literacy Portal.

Key components include:

  • Completion of the Climate Science 101 course
  • Submission of a certificate of completion during application
  • Possible additional assignments, quizzes, or courses for shortlisted candidates

This phase ensures that all participants have a solid understanding of climate science and foundational concepts before advancing.

Phase 2: Intensive Hybrid Training (Ghana)

Selected fellows will participate in a one-week hybrid training program hosted in Ghana.

This phase includes:

  • Advanced climate negotiation training
  • Policy writing workshops
  • Simulation exercises replicating real-world negotiations
  • Deep exploration of UNFCCC structures and processes
  • Analysis of regional and global climate policy intersections

This immersive experience equips fellows with practical, real-world negotiation and policy skills.

Phase 3: Mentorship and COP31 Engagement

The final phase focuses on applied learning, mentorship, and direct engagement in climate policy processes.

Activities include:

  • Thematic negotiation labs
  • Development of policy briefs
  • One-on-one mentorship and guidance
  • Coordinated engagement before, during, and after COP31
  • Strategic exposure to global climate negotiation platforms

This phase ensures that fellows transition from learners to active contributors in climate governance.
