About the Gender + AI Reporting Fellowship
The Gender + AI Reporting Fellowship builds on the success of its first cohort, which supported women journalists in producing impactful stories on emerging technologies and gender issues.
The 2026 cohort aims to select 10 women journalists who are passionate about storytelling, investigative journalism, and exploring the societal implications of AI.
Participants will gain hands-on experience, mentorship, and access to resources that support high-quality journalism.
Fellowship Duration and Structure
- Duration: April – September 2026 (6 months)
The fellowship is structured into three key phases:
1. Training Phase
Participants will engage in intensive online training sessions covering:
- AI literacy for journalists
- Gender-sensitive reporting
- Investigating the social impacts of AI
- Ethical and responsible use of AI tools
- Reporting on data, algorithms, and digital systems
These sessions will be facilitated by AWJP, DW Akademie, experienced journalists, and AI experts.
2. Mentorship
Each fellow will receive one-on-one mentorship from experienced editors and journalists.
Mentorship includes:
- Story development guidance
- Editorial feedback
- Support during reporting and production
3. Story Production
Fellows will:
- Develop and publish four original journalism stories
- Explore how AI impacts women and marginalized communities
- Use AI tools to enhance reporting

The programme aims to produce at least 40 stories across Kenyan media outlets.
4. Showcase and Networking
At the end of the fellowship:
