Eurodoc ValDem Ambassador Programme 2026: Empowering Researchers to Defend Democracy in Europe
At a time when democratic values and academic freedoms face increasing challenges, the Eurodoc ValDem Ambassador Programme 2026 emerges as a timely and impactful initiative. Organized by European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers, this programme is designed to equip early-career researchers with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to become ambassadors for democracy within academia and society.
Building on the success of its first edition, this second round offers a unique opportunity to critically explore the relationship between higher education, research, and democratic systems across Europe.
Programme Overview
The ValDem (Values and Democracy) Ambassador Programme aims to strengthen the role of researchers in promoting and safeguarding democratic principles. It focuses on how universities and research institutions contribute to democratic resilience, particularly in a context of growing democratic backsliding and threats to academic freedom.
Participants will gain both theoretical insights and practical advocacy skills, enabling them to actively promote democratic values in their institutions, research communities, and beyond.

Programme Structure
The ValDem Ambassador Programme is divided into two core thematic components:
1. The Democratic Mission of Research and Higher Education in Europe
This section explores how universities and research institutions contribute to democratic societies, including their role in fostering critical thinking, civic engagement, and knowledge production.
2. The Role of Democratic Public Authorities for Research in Europe
Participants will examine how public institutions and policies shape research ecosystems and support (or challenge) democratic values within academia.

Applicants can choose between two participation tracks:
Track 1: Full Ambassador Programme
- Includes full participation in seminars and activities
- Limited to 80 participants to ensure high-quality engagement
- Provides a comprehensive ambassador experience
Track 2: Lecture Participation Only
- Access to programme lectures
- Open until 260 total registrations are reached
- Ideal for those seeking flexible engagement
