Role Overview: What Does a Policy Analyst Do?
As a Policy Analyst in the 5th cohort, you will actively engage in producing research-driven content on global issues. This role offers both independence and collaboration, allowing you to explore your interests while receiving structured editorial support.
Key Responsibilities
Policy Analysts are expected to:
- Conduct independent research on international security, defence, economics, and strategy
- Pitch and develop original research ideas
- Produce high-quality written outputs based on selected workload formats
- Collaborate with fellow analysts in working groups
- Maintain effective communication and meet agreed deadlines
Flexible Workload Structure
CISES operates an output-based contribution model, giving you flexibility to choose your workload depending on your schedule.
Each month, you are expected to complete one of the following:
- Four short-form articles, OR
- Two medium-form articles, OR
- One long-form article
You may also combine formats, such as:
- Two short-form + one medium-form piece
If you are part of a working group:
- Minimum requirement: One short-form piece per month (unless otherwise agreed)
This flexibility makes it ideal for students balancing academic or personal commitments.
Who Can Apply?

- Current undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral students
- Recent graduates (2024 or later)
- Individuals in at least their second year of tertiary education
