- Annual scholarship of €19,740 (gross)
- Housing allowance of €2,200 (gross)
- Approximate net monthly stipend of €1,600
- 26 free meals per month
- 50% increase in funding for research abroad
- Personal research budget (10% of scholarship)
Students also gain access to academic facilities, including libraries, seminars, and research support services throughout the programme.
Programme Structure and Academic Experience
The PhD programme is carefully structured over three years:
Year 1
- Mandatory coursework
- Training in research methodologies and soft skills
- Core interdisciplinary courses in:
- Human Rights
- Global Politics
- Sustainability
Year 2
- Mandatory international research period (minimum 6 months abroad)
Year 3
- Thesis writing and submission
After submission, the thesis is evaluated by external referees, followed by a viva examination within a defined timeframe.
The programme is fully residential, requiring students to live in Pisa and actively participate in academic life.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for this PhD programme, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification
- Candidates completing their degree by September 30, 2026 are also eligible to apply
- Degrees from disciplines outside the core fields are accepted if applicants demonstrate strong relevant knowledge
- English proficiency is required, as the programme is fully taught in English
Students will also be expected to learn an additional foreign language (minimum A2 level) during the programme.

- The programme is fully funded only; self-funded applications are not accepted
- It is a full-time commitment, and students cannot engage in other employment
- Accommodation is not provided, but students receive a housing allowance
- No special arrangements are provided for students with families
